How to fight laziness?

Sign in to disble this ad
I’ve been reading a booklet from e.s.t. live in hamburg CD the other day, there’s a part where Esbjorn describing sound check and preparations before the show:
„ Due to heavy traffic the guys with P.A.-system got stuck and will arrive late at the hall, which means soundcheck is going to be delayed. I flee into my private dressing room, practice some music by Bach on the upright rehersal piano. Jo, our road manager, knocks on the door, and informs me that the catering has been set up. I go and check it out, but decide not to eat yet. Nothing is ready on stage so I go back to Bach. A while later another knock on the door and this time it means soundcheck.....”.
For me (one of the laziest asses in the world) this was a real amazement. I would normally chill with other band members, maybe discussing set list, maybe having a free drink (if it is a club gig), but never practicing. After reading something like this it seems that I can start practice more, that I can be like one of those hard working guys, but I always find excuses for myself, like “I’m too tired after the work” or “I will start practicing real hard tomorrow”, but that tomorrow never comes for some reason. I also read that guitar player from RHCP comes after the day spent in the studio and transcribe some new tune by ear, I would definitely say I’m too tired to practice after the full day spent in the studio, I even quit practicing next day after the gig. Please give me some ideas how to fight my laziness.

See, you've got to get off your ass and do something. When you're lazy that will be very hard but once you're in the habit of doing it's really easy.

Or so I was told.

This is this guys job. You said your tired after work, well this is work for this gentleman. If you played bass for a living you would practice in your downtime. Most musicians I know dont do the typical 9-5 40 hour workweek. Its a totally different kind of work. Id say your being hard on yourself.

You = job plus playing bass when you can
This other gentleman = job

If he did your job in his downtime I can see comparing apples to apples but its not a fair anolgy.

You are 100% right, but I think he got this job by not being lazy and practicing a lot. I was also doing music for life for 2 years and was lazy, of course I was practicing much more than now, but anyway I ended up looking for a “regular” job.

It's all about getting stared.

My day job is totally about self-motivation. In a bad week I have a few minor things I need to do, but can waste the rest of the week just messing round. However once I get started on something I'll work ALL hours to get stuff done. I am basically lazy, but once I get it in my head that something can/should be done, I can find the time to do it. Every second I waste on other stuff (like eating, sleeping etc) becomes painfull. I can get HUGE amounts done.

You need to find what it is that you want to do, the DO IT. When you figure out what IT is then there'll be nothing that can stop you.

It's not laziness IMHO - I'd suggest you review what drives you to play.
If you are struggling to find motivation and time to play/practice, it could simply just not be as great of a priority or as passionate of a hobby as you want it to be. For some people simply being in a band with a group of friends is more important than actually playing music, and that's okay!
