One can always hope for that "diamond in the rough" pawn shop opportunity.

Goodwill and similar stores.

Nashville has stores that specialize in buying and selling used instruments. Maybe many other large cities also have such stores. Check your yellow pages or even on line at Yellowpages.com.

Go to Google.com and type in "used musical instruments". Something like 118,000 sites pop up that buy, sell and trade second hand instruments.

I'm going to take this oppertunity in this thread to complain about the used market in Windsor, Ontario Canada.

The used market is so terrible. AHH!!! nothing but starter bass'. AHH!!!!! crappy Sears brand guitars AHH!!!! only guitar combo's AHHH!!! Have never seen a used bass amp or cab ever AHHH!!!!

I did hear Windsor is a great place for vintage Gibson guitars.

You are on the right track with where to look but you need to refine how you go about finding used equipment. Just about everyone I am familiar with knows that I am a bass player and I go out of my way to tell them that I am always looking out for equipment. I have come across some decent deals this way. I know for a fact that there is alot of equipment out there is not actively for sale, its sitting in closests, garages, attics, and storage facilities. You would also be very surprised at what people throw away. I played in a band back around 1983 and our guitar player showed up with an old Ampeg tube amp, if i recall correctly it had an Ampeg logo on a glass plate that was lit from below, anyway, it was fully functional and it was sitting top of a garbage can on pickup day.
