How to fix a cord?

Sign in to disble this ad
My bass cord is broken. I think I know which end of it... but I have no idea if it's just something loose or something...
Any tips? Any ways I could fix it myself? Take it apart? It's useless to me while it's not working, anyway.

Usually it can be pretty easy with a soldering iron and a little know how.

There is a soldering iron here, but I have 0 know-how. I guess I can just wait and see if I can get someone to fix it. :P

you first have to discern whether it is a break in the cable, and where it is, or just a bad connection. After that, it's only two solder connections. Core to tip, shield to sleeve.

I use coax cable for my pedal interconnects, as it is solid-core, and well sheilded already, and really cheap in bulk....

What kind of cord is it.... one of the ones the the silver jackets you can screw off and pull it down to expose the wires? if so unscrew both ends until you see what wire came loose then solder it back together.

You can probably buy a new one for the cost of a soldering iron & solder.

Well, my boyfriend is a gear freak and tone freak and all of that, so he has a soldering iron here that's more than capable, I'm sure.
It's a Monster Cable, and I'm pretty sure the end that plugs into the amp is broken. It produces no sound as if it's not connected at all.

Monster cables have a life time warranty. Should be able to take it back and swap it out for a new one.

Yeah, take it to a licensed Monster Cable dealer, like Guitar Center, and they will give you a new one even without a receipt.

Oh? Will do. I'm still gonna see if my boyfriend can fix it, though. We live a good hour drive away from where we got it.

Don't go soldering on a Monster cable, they are warrantied forever, unless you try to fix them yourself.

If you're interested in learning basic soldering technique, there are several tutorials on YouTube, such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4

On the other hand there's something to be said for cables with lifetime warranties.

Not that I'm aware of, just make sure that if what you got is dank that you don't drive on it. Hell, it may take you 6 hours to get there. lol

Haha. It's some badass stuff, but I don't drive under the influence of anything, so no worries.

Unsolder the plug, cut two inches off the cable, resolder the plug - repeat until you have cable that is two inces long :-)

Unless you have a lifetime warranty on the cable of course :-).
