| I'm doing a lot of experimentation at the moment with stage monitoring (including in-ear stuff).
At the moment, I am experimenting with on-stage monitoring using a little Behringer mixer (a little 4-channel mixer), which cost me about £40, that I usually use at home for practising - MP3 player in one channel, panned to my right ear, guitar into another channel, panned to my left ear.
Last night I tried it at band practice, with each of the three guitars DI'd into a channel and the vocals into another - with the mixer driving a set of headphones. The mixer can drive a set of headphones to a reasonable volume. I have a lot more work to do to sort out the mix, but at least I could hear everything at a volume that didn't leave my ears ringing. Remember, of course, that IMHO noise cancelling (or noise blocking) earphones won't block out all the ambient noise (expecially a loud drummer) but I have found so far that they will block out enough to offer a reasonable level of hearing protection.
This sort of setup might solve your problem for a fairly low cost.
