How I manage my GAS

Sign in to disble this ad
Notice I said "manage," not "cure!" I think only absolute poverty would stop me from buying gear, but to manage my GAS, I follow (or at least try to follow) three simple rules:

1. Don't obsess over finding the "Holy Grail." I'm ridiculously into envelope filters, and I was sure I'd find "The One." Instead I found that, for me at least, there is no "One." Now I have several reasonably priced pedals that cover all my filter bases. There may be certain pedals that have tons of controls, but that doesn't mean they will always get you the sound in your head.

2. Try what you already have. This one has saved me a ton of money! Just when I think, "Oh, I've got to have another (insert gear of choice here)," I thoroughly tweak what I already have, and most of the time I realize it's just what I need. We tend to make better gear choices than we give ourserves credit for. The grass is not always greener on the other side!

3. As ye buy, so shall ye sell. So you're sure you need that shiny new (or nice vintage) gear. What are you willing to give up for it? When it becomes an either/or situation, it's easier to look at current gear in a more favorable light.

Anyway, those are my GAS management techniques. I'd love to hear how other TBers handle it!
