How I rationalized owning multiple guitars to my family

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was getting crap from my family members at a recent function because of my multiple guitars and basses so on the fly I came up with the perfect explaination. I now offer this to all of you in hopes that you can finally put your family and friends inquiries to an end.

An instrument is like a friend.... none of them are quite the same hence your relationship with each will be unique. Its because of this that there are songs you will write on one guitar that you never would have on a different one.... and you cant put a price on writing music.... you keep your songs with you for life.

My family's always been pretty aware of the difference between instruments. I don't have to explain anything as long as the bills are paid on time.

I suppose if I stopped buying instruments that are radically different from one another, and started collecting different years of identically-colored J basses, that might take some explaining.

I just tell them
#1 - its my money
#2 - they all sound different
#3 - its my money

#1 and #3 generally shut them up but I work 60-72 hours a week so if I want to buy something I do it.

+1

yup

Noone is in the position to demand an explanation from me on this issue.

My father asked me about this this the other day.
I said that it's the same as his collection of guns. Different pistols, rifles, calibers,... he does several competitions with it.

It's sorta similar with my instruments.

my dad has spent umpteen amounts of money on boats over his married life,... (small dinghys) and also played a variety of sports and still does,... so I get my little hobby without too much heck so long as I'm not overspending (do get the occasional, geez there seems to be a new pedal every week) but im pretty happy with mine,... I gas for new and different amps all the time when I goto music stores,... but for now I'm quite satisifed with my gear and I have my fretted 5 and my fretless 5 and if I ever need it a fretless 4,... quite happy with all of them...

After seeing Freddie Washington play one bass, his '72 Precision all night at the Steely Dan concert, I'm kind of wondering what I'm doing with 5 basses. Really.

If my wife ever asked that, (which she wouldn't) I'd ask her why she needed 95 pairs of blue jean's or 200 pairs of shoes or 50 hats.

My philosophy on spending money on music equipment is that it's better than pissing it up against the wall or blowing it up my nose. Plus, my equipment makes money. I generally don't buy a new piece of gear until the last piece of gear I bought has at least paid for itself with gigging.

My family knows better than to question my gear... I'd rationalize it with a 'look'. That usually shuts them right up

Truthfully, my Grandfather (with whom I am most associated with) had a basement studio, pre CBS guitars and amps, 60s Guild, 70s Epiphone and Ovation acoustics, Framus Guitar/banjo, tenor and 5 string banjos, 70s Ric 4001, Hammond B3, Vibraphone, various other goodies... My collection pales in comparison

When ever my dad or sis say something about my basses / gear, I just point out that the two of them each have at least one Nikon camera worth more than all my bass gear put together.... They both have at least 3 Nikon SLRs, and at least 8 to 10 fairly expensive lenses each. Even when I've got the money saved up for the Dingwall Combustion and get that...well, they each have at least two cameras and several lenses which, by themselves, are worth more than the Combustion will cost me! Anywho, it's my money; I don't disparage their expensive camera gear...
