I noticed that I have more instruments than straps right now and the one that I have is kind of ugly (dark green nylon and cheap, but has apparently held up fine for 5+ years, I could probably get at least another 5 out of it) but matches my natural finish bass in a camouflague kind of way.
How important is it to have a cool strap? Does it improve your stage presence or have health benefits (e.g., if you get one of those straps with a huge shoulder pad)?

If you're a showman, it's a real easy and relatively inexpensive way to accesorize your look.

I'd recommend some kind of quality suede or leather as they never are out of style in any setting, they will probably outlast your career and they tend to just look better with age and wear.
What's cooler than that? |

The brandname, quality and build of a strap can determine soooo much for a bassist' ability to do their part properly. I'd hate to think about what position i would be in if i had to play with a strap that operated at a sub-par level. |

| | | | It only matters if looks are important to you. A strap does it's purpose whether it is plain brown or hot pink with white hearts on it. The strap on my bass is black and plain, about as simple as you can get but it works. If I wanted to jazz it up I suppose I could put some buttons on it or whatever, but not a big deal to me. One with a pad on it would be ideal to get if you do have shoulder pads, but again if it is just for looks or novelty then its personal preference.

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | My straps work with the particular bass they're on. Black on the black, brown on the natural, and white on my ugly ass Hoppus because nothing else seemed to work as well.
Now, a cool breathable strap, that might be something to look into.

All my straps are comfy as can be.
I think you can have both good looks and comfort.

That being said, I splurged a few years back on an Anthology Wear strap and have never looked back. It's been on my bass since day one, and has served me extremely well --- which, again, to me, is a very cool thing.

Then again my bass was black with gold hardware, so it worked.
