How Important is a Cool Strap?

Sign in to disble this ad
I noticed that I have more instruments than straps right now and the one that I have is kind of ugly (dark green nylon and cheap, but has apparently held up fine for 5+ years, I could probably get at least another 5 out of it) but matches my natural finish bass in a camouflague kind of way.

How important is it to have a cool strap? Does it improve your stage presence or have health benefits (e.g., if you get one of those straps with a huge shoulder pad)?

I own about 50 straps. Wide, narrow, animal prints, every color in the rainbow, sparkly, fuzzy, some with my name on them.

If you're a showman, it's a real easy and relatively inexpensive way to accesorize your look.

Not really important. I've never noticed a guys strap in all the years I've been watching live bands. Now, a comfortable strap is VERY important.

3" wide is enough to distribute the weight of most basses comfortably. I'd recommend some kind of quality suede or leather as they never are out of style in any setting, they will probably outlast your career and they tend to just look better with age and wear.

What's cooler than that?

Look to be totally honest i've got some kickass gear but my most crucial piece of equipment without doubt is my strap. The brandname, quality and build of a strap can determine soooo much for a bassist' ability to do their part properly. I'd hate to think about what position i would be in if i had to play with a strap that operated at a sub-par level.

This is what I use (the 3" version):

Franklin Original Series Guitar Straps | Suede Series | Electric Acoustic & Bass Guitar Straps | Franklin Strap

It looks classy and is super comfortable.

It only matters if looks are important to you. A strap does it's purpose whether it is plain brown or hot pink with white hearts on it. The strap on my bass is black and plain, about as simple as you can get but it works. If I wanted to jazz it up I suppose I could put some buttons on it or whatever, but not a big deal to me. One with a pad on it would be ideal to get if you do have shoulder pads, but again if it is just for looks or novelty then its personal preference.

ME TOO! actually mine is smooth leather. super comfortable, but I've had to punch additional holes in it. It seems like it was designed for either really fat or tall people.

My straps work with the particular bass they're on. Black on the black, brown on the natural, and white on my ugly ass Hoppus because nothing else seemed to work as well.

Now, a cool breathable strap, that might be something to look into.

Good point.

All my straps are comfy as can be.

I think you can have both good looks and comfort.

The last thing I want while I'm trying to concentrate on my bass playing is my strap breathing heavily on the side of my neck.

Cool, to me, means it supports my bass(es), has a ton of durability, and looks good while doing it. That being said, I splurged a few years back on an Anthology Wear strap and have never looked back. It's been on my bass since day one, and has served me extremely well --- which, again, to me, is a very cool thing.

Yeah, I have to punch additional holes in mine too. It's worth it, though.

Mine is a plain simple black strap, but I did add my old Artillery hat badge, plus my old STNG comm badge (the original size, not that big ugly one that makes noise ) Does that make me a space gunner?
Then again my bass was black with gold hardware, so it worked.
