If it doesn't last at least 20 years it either wasn't a good cable to start with, or you didn't really take "proper care of" it.

I purchased one of these 18' DiMarzio cables (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...t-cable/332200) almost 4 1/2 years ago and it is still going strong. When playing gigs when the lights go out it does help with the chrome shining so I know where my cable is at all time and stepping (and tripping) on it is minimal plus it's different from the standard black cable. It is pretty durable too.

We have cables go bad at church all the time, but people abuse them and they usually turn into a big pile of spaghetti. I could shoot some people...

Most top quality cables are reinforced where the cable meets the jack housing. That's fine but another place they can fail is the insulator between the tip and the sleeve.

It's critical not to drop the tips on the floor when winding them.
Friends don't let friends wind cables drunk.

IME it comes down to 2 things:
1) Leave plenty of slack so you don't stress the connections inside the plug (this is also important for the gear you're plugging it into!
2) Don't drop the tips on the ground.

Friends don't let friends wind cables, period. I can't tell you how many buddies I've wanted to bitch-slap for completely screwing up a simple over-under.

I think the Church frowns upon shooting people. But you're right; if they can't treat a cable with respect, there's no use for them!

Cables should last a lifetime. Buy a good one (or two), and never pay for another one.
+1 on the Monster. I had the same thing happen to me. About 15 years ago I took my malfunctioning Monster cable to GC and they gave me a new on. Still got it.

I have a cable that is over five thousand years old. It was discovered in an archaeological dig in the Nile Delta, where, interestingly enough, they also discovered a race of skeleton people. I am unable to determine the brand, but the Hieroglyphics stamped on the bronze connectors has been translated to mean something akin to "Ramalama the Powerful," or possibly, "Waves of a Planet."

It is over two hundred feet long, and can fit in the horn of a shoe, and it conducts so effortlessly that sometimes I catch my bass playing itself. Sadly, it is far more talented than I am.

Here is a photo of some gravel, and a golf ball:

Here is a photo of a little girl digging to China:

I will never replace this cable, as I have now joined an obscure religious cult, that worships dryer lint and albino puppies from small Latin American countries, and one of our highest principles is to take all gear with us to the grave, whether it works or not. I am studying extreme hypnosis, and soon will be able to play without any cables at all, except for show.

Here is a photo of a guy drawing on a woman's chest:

I hope this has been helpful.

Here is a photo of some hands, making a face:

I have one cable that is at least 30 yrs old and still working fine. It's one of the old Fender grey cables with the knurled connectors. Indestructible.

Maybe over 40 years or so. The rubber/plastic coating will dry out on really old cables.

I've got a couple of hand-me-down cables that are 30+ years, and one or two with a stamp from a music shop that closed over 20 years ago.

If the cable's not junk, are careful not to put undue twists in them, and you use a good method (like over-under wrapping) that leaves the cables stress-free, they'll last a long, long time. Cables usually break due to human error, like people kicking them, yanking them out of things, etc. Otherwise, the well made ones really don't go 'bad.'

I'm in my (early) 60's, and I'm still using some cables I made when I was in my mid 20's. In my experience... Quality cable + Good solder job + Careful Handling = Long Life
