How loud do you play at GC when trying out a bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I usually play as loud as I play at home, volume and gain at about 11 o'clock, which I think is pretty reasonable. But I friggin hate the guys that go into the bass section simply to blow out the eardrums of the other players in the vicinity. I think its disrespectful and consider those guys amatures. So, how loud do you think is too loud when your trying out BASSES, not amps?

A volume where I can hear the tone of the bass and here what I am playing clearly, as well as be able to tell the differences when changing the onboard preamps controls. Anything above that is gravy.

If I'm trying out a bass, loud enough to hear myself clearly and to hear the variations (As in where I play, whether I use a pick, onboard preamp, etc) clearly.

If I'm trying out an amp, I would put it up a bit higher, just to see if it can last at "gig volumes" without breaking up.

If I'm just in there jackinn' around, I keep it pretty low. If I'm serious about buying something, I'll crank it up as loud and for as long as it takes to make a determination. If I like it, I buy it and get the f~ck out...

Loud enough to hear myself over: the teenage metal head who is finger tapping Eruption for the 5th time in 10 minutes, the emo kid wearing girls jeans playing the same 3 bar chords for 15 minutes, or insert person who annoys you here.

Rarely do I ever plug a bass in. If it feels good in my hands and sounds decent acoustically, that's good enough for me.

The one time I bought a bass in a shop I played it for 15mins unplugged, 2 mins plugged in to a tiny practise amp to check the electronics, and 20mins haggling on the price. If it worked, I knew what it sounded like.

The time I bought an amp in a shop I rattled the place - felt self conscious, but needed to be done.

the only time I turn it up is when the ******* who always comes in and turns his up and starts slapping some krap riff and misses half of the notes...it is always the same guy too, I wonder why?

I do the same. I only turn it up loud if I plan on buying it.

I usually set it all the way up, then turn up the highs, mids, and lows to all the way, then continue trying to force the volume knob to see if it has a secret 11 setting. Then, I butcher the intro to portrait of tracey for about 20 minutes, flip my hair out of my eyes and walk away, after leaving the bass leaning on the amp and plugged in.

Like most other people, I play just loudly enough to be able to hear variations (playing towards the bridge vs. towards the neck, using both pickups on full and then turning one off, etc).

Sounds like a good situation to try out how well a bass/amp can cut through in a "mix"?

+1, finding one where you dig the feel and playability comes first, most of 'em won't even pass that test.

Now I remember why I don't hang out at GC.

Yeah, Thank God there's no GC here in Guam...

But, on another note....

I like to go into the guitar room and just FLAIL AWAY with some LOUD whammy bar distortion stuff. You'd think Steve Vai was there....
