My 16 year old grabbed one of my jazz basses off the wall about 3 months ago and hasn't looked back. He has turned into a smoking bass player...listens to and plays these crazy riffs and smoking bass lines by Mutemath, Reign of Kindo, and other bands like that...
I watch him stupified...how did he learn in 3 months what I haven't learned in 18 years of playing (I started on bass after moving on from guitar when I was 33)...and the kicker, he doesn't think he's all that great...

Just because his hands may be faster doesn't mean he'd know how to play with a group, and unless he's Jaco a bass player who can't play witha group is about useless. |

I think he's getting it slowly...
He tells me there is stuff I do that he can't figure out so maybe in 18 years, he'll have it too...
I am proud of him and glad he finally found something he loves to do...until a kid (or anyone for that matter) finds their passion, they're like a ship drifting without a rudder.

| | Registered User | | | | Not yet... But I predict that by the end of the school year, my daughter will totally blow me out of the water.
She's playing bass for the high school marching band in the percussion section. She's the only bass player. Those kids rehearse 18 hours a week! And practice at home plus lessons on top of that...!
She just played her first performance at a football game last night in front of at least 1500 people. I asked her if she was nervous, and she said, "Not really." If nothing else, she will at least become comfortable playing in front of large crowds.
BTW- she just got one of the new SX's with the MM style pickups... We popped some Chromes on there and she sounded great. I was impressed with the SX; didn't even need to adjust the action... Playable right out of the box. This one: http://www.rondomusic.com/URSA2MNHUM3TS.HTML
Edit: Not quite as playable as I at first thought! After having the Chromes on for a few days, by the time we went to her lesson, our bass instructor lowered the action quite a bit & taught her how to sight down the neck... And also suggested nickel rounds instead of the chromes. Still really happy with the bass. :-) and we're both still learning what makes a good one.

He was hot in a Phil Leash kind of way but, man, he was playing in a completely different building. Too me ( I'm an old fart that plays to support the song , singer and the solo.) it wasn't music he was playing.... he was just masturbating with the instrument... I hope your son takes your advice to heart....... as soon as possible...being part of an ensemble is what music is all about, .... Hot or Not!

He certainly does many things better than I do. It won't be long until he blows me away. He plays bass in his highschool jazz band.

I spent good money on quality lessons for him, something I never did for myself. And I see it paying dividends already. He's already in high demand, in his middle school, to play in the concert and jazz bands...

As far as kids playing bass, at the rate my 3 year old is going, he'll surpass me by the time he's 10... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
