How many of you played in some kind of school band?

I unfortunatly never was in band as a child, although I wish I had so I would be a better player today, but as a child music wasnt my thing, and currently my school already has a bass player for its band program and im very jelous of the extra knowledge the band kids recieve.

stuff im ready to admit too

Testimonie of Me!

I struggled in school and life to be honest, this led to a real rollercoaster ride - i was stupid in my choices as they never led to the right result!

Until one day i had a revelation!

Growing up i always wanted something and normally it was girls and all iwanted was for them to see me like i was cool, it took me years to discover what was really out there!

1. Started Secondary school - (12yrs old)
Joined astronamy club in 1994 - No girls (there were some but i was more feminine if you catch my drift, lets say i had less facial hair!)

2. Learned the trombone in 1995- Some girls around the orchestra pit - Mostly from the geek end of life - no all were!

3. Learned the trumpet in 1995- Same girls, uncool to date these girls!

4. Learned double bass in 1996 - Same girls - YUCK!

5. Double bass teacher was late, bass guitar teacher was not! - started bass guitar in 1996 - New girls!

6. 1997 - we played Nirvana - "polly" and "smells like teen spirit" in the school play - CHA CHING - Girls everywhere and without the beards and pencil cases!

7. 1998 - started loads of bands and they all died!

8. 1999 - Blue fish - great band recorded a ep and we had fun! - i was dropped due to going to a girls house instead of practice.

Saw hundred of Gigs and met Fear factory and Hed p.e

9. 2000 - sold bass to buy weed and other drugs!!!!

10. 2001-2004 - working as a climbing and canoeing instructor and this was cool but i was also being a drug and drink dependant freak - like everyday!!!!!!!!

11. Easter 2004 - was evicted from my house due to being too loud and too many late night parties. so i went to church with my Girlfreind as it was easter sunday - i heard the gospel and became a christian

May 2004 - Gave up drinking and smoking! started reading the bible

12. January 2005 - Playing bass in the worship group at NLC

13. 1 September 2005 - got baptised in the sea - old school!

14. 2 September 2005 - got married to the girl who dragged me to church.

15. 2006 - began leading worship once a month

16. November 2006 - started a youth Church movement for 11 - 21yr olds called Oxygen - 10 decisons on the first night!

17. 2007 - Playing at worship events all around our county

18. I Lead worship with FOZ - lead singer of Audacious!

19. 5th September 2007 - decide to move away to the nearset city - will be informing Church on sunday that we are leaving!

20 - dont know yet but im excited with what God will do with me next!

In elementary school, I was in band playing trumpet and trombone. Nothing in middle school. In high school, I was in symphonic band, jazz band (playing bass) and in the gospel choir (also playing bass).

Yo! Major band nerd here...

Played tenor sax from 5th grade all the way through high school. You're right: It does help build your musicianship. Taught me focus, discipline, how to read, how to run a rehearsal, etc.

I didn't try hard enough. It was a waste of my time because I made it a waste of time. I could have learned everything I needed to know in those classes instead I fooled around.

Meh you live, you learn, you rock to the song thats got you there

Middle School [6th thru 8th grade]-played bass guitar in Guitar Society and jazz band [8th grade only], played cello in school orchestra.

High School-quit cello, but picked up DB.
I played DB in: Wind Ensemble [#1 concert band] for 2 years, Symphonic Band [#2 concert band] for a year, freshman band for a year, Marching Band for 3 years, Jazz Band for 4 years, and i did "guest" spots with the school orchestra for 3 years. Guest Spots = typically choir shows where i was already playing electric bass, so i got the music 2 days before the show and then played first stand I also played bass for my own graduation ceremony. I sat w/the orchestra-those robes aren't very conducive to DB playing.

I played BG in: Marching band 4 years, Jazz Band 4 years, First Edition Show Choir [#1 show choir] Band 4 years, Pep [show] Band for 4 years, Swing Band [#2 jazz band] for 2 years as a filler since they didn't have a bass player for their 1 concert, Xcap [#2 & #3 show choir] band for 2 years-one time as a 2 weeks before competition replacement and one year as the actual bassist, and then i did recording sessions w/the #1 concert choir. I played for all of the Choir Holiday & Spring Shows for 4 years. I also played for our productions of Grease and the Wizard of Oz.

In addition to the above i did whatever one-off small ensemble that the school wanted/needed.

I am extremely thankful for the exposure to such a wide variety of music during high school and only wish that i would have practiced and studied both basses more seriously.

Trombone in grades 5-6
Bassoon in jazz and classical ensembles grades 7-10
Bass in jazz, fusion and rock ensembles grade 12

Although I can't really say that much of what I played in those ensembles was challenging, it gave me a lot of practice time and the director of the ensembles was the coolest, taught me most of my technique and influence on bass.

lots of band, orchestra and theater experience in my school days.

Grade 2-12 Piano lessons from beginner through jazz improv

Grade 3-6 URB (1/2 size to start) in the District Orchestra

Grade 7-8 URB (3/4) in Middle School Orchestra
Grade 8 Electric Bass private lessons, started playing electric

Grade 9-12 URB in High School Orchestra
Electric Bass in Jazz Band (full big band )
Electric Bass for Jazz Choir (small vocal group)
Choir (sang bass of course !)
Electric and URB in High School musical pit band
Started gigging in my own cover band
Did seconds and back-up calls for my Dad (a pro bass player in Chicago)

College URB in Orchestra and Bass ensemble
Played/paid my way through college

All of this taught me lot; sight reading in multiple clefs, ensemble playing, practice discipline, rehearsal discipline, theory, improvisation, vocalization (although I'm a pretty meager singer) and playing bass in many forms etc. etc.

I'm happy to have had all the experience.

I played tuba for 6 years from middle school to high school graduation, in marching and concert bands-I made Ohio All-State Band my senior year. I also played trombone for a couple years in HS jazz band, and played electric bass for a year in jazz band as well.

I also play bass in my university's jazz band.
