For those who are not offended by the use of a pick on a bass, how much would you be willing to spend on a pick used by one of your favorite bassist at a significant show ? I ask because I was tempted to buy one of the picks Jason Newsted used at the S&M shows that was made into a DVD. The pick ended up going for over $45, I was thinking I would spend a bit over the 20 mark but im not sure about nearly $50 with the shipping.

I got 4-5 picks (along with many other things) from shows I went to, and when I see them I can remember how I got them at the show. They bring back some nice memories.
What's the point of a pick someone else got? I have one, that a good friend gave me, and it's definitely not the same. I wouldn't pay for it. |

But I'd pay prolly around $20 for, say, the pick used by Lemmy at one of the shows on No Sleep Til Hammersmith. But I suppose it all depends on whether it'd be seen as a piece of memorabilia or actually used to play.

no point having a concert pick if its not sentimental to me, and it wouldnt be if i jus bought it, but hey each to their own.

Why would I buy a used pick? Besides, you don't know where that guy's hand was before he took the stage and grabbed that pick. Take the pick home and accidentally drop it--you may NEVER get that smell out of the carpet. No thanks!

Oh, wait, my favorite bassists generally don't use picks so I'd bet if I had one of James Jamerson's picks, it'd be worth a LOT of money. If I could buy Jamerson's pick (and have its provenance verified) for less than $100, I'd probably be able to sell it for $200. Same with Duck Dunn, Nathan East, Pino Pallidino, Jaco, Freebo, etc.
I got one of Joe Osborn's picks for free (well, it came with a set of strings), and I got one of Carol Kaye's picks included in a package of educational material I bought. Does that count?
Otherwise, I'd pay twenty-five cents, tops.
John

| | | | Aw gee! I thought this thread was going to be about those pickers who pay big bucks for genuine, real, vintage tortoise shell picks, or their synthetic equivalents that can set you back some serious coin as far as buying a pick goes. Mandolin pickers are a crazy bunch when it comes to pick geeking.
As far as collecting picks used by celebrity artists goes, that's simply what the market will bring, always dependent on how much a collector is willing to spend for it. It's an interesting hobby to say the least, and I know a couple of guys into it. It's not my thing however, and I really can't comment on what's hot or not, etc, etc. |

Catching one at a show would be cool though. Somehow, that seems more authentic then buying one. |

For the record, I have a pick used by B.B. King. Maybe we can trade. (heh heh) | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
