How much you are into music

''Listen to everything'' is a very common advice for beginners here in TB but I was wondering how many of us actually listen to everything on daily basis and I mean different music, like: text-mex and Jazz and not the type of ''oh yeah I listening everything: death metal, bloody metal....'' I did not realize how diverse my musical taste was until I started using an ipod ( 4-5 months ago ) on shuffle mode while driving, I drive 45 minutes each way to work everyday, I don't have many songs , 380 songs only, but this is what I found:

Genres:

Rock : all styles: Rockbilly, classic, old, new , progressive, etc.
Jazz : many styles: Classic, fusion, modern, Latin, etc)
Pop
Funk
R&B
Metal : Heavy, thrash, hard, speed etc
Country
Reggae
Hip Hop
Latin: Ranchera, bolero, mariachi, tex-mex, cumbia, bachata, ballenato, trova etc.
Classical: Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi etc.
Ethnic: African, Georgian
Flamenco

Periods

Older: Schütz - Cantiones sacrae 1625

Newest: Ziggy Marley, ‘Wild and Free’ June 2011

and of course music from 60's, 70's , 80's , 90's , 00,

Languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Georgian, some African dialect.

Any one else ?

I would say my taste of music is rather diverse:
I listen to punk, pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, jazz, funk and classical music on a regular basis, as well as the occasional injection of musical theatre, folk and blues. It really depends on what groups I am performing with at the time, and what style of music we are playing. However I do seem to have random periods of listening to only one style of music, these can last 1 or 2 days, or a month or two (I have no control over this, I just sort of crave a particular group/ style). As a teenager, I have mainly "new" music (post 2000), however, I am just getting into Deep Purple, so maybe I'm going into a classic rock phase...

I listen to a good bit of everything, but there will be days or weeks where I'll focus on one genre much more than any other. That said, if you go through my 60gigs of songs on iTunes you'll find music from just about every genre.

I actually worry about this. I don't listen to nearly enough music. I just grow bored if it isn't what i like. That said, i enjoy: Dubstep, electronic, rap, and rock. I can listen to just about anything if i put effort into appreciating it but it seems these are the genres i find i don't have to put effort into enjoying. It's probably bad, but that's how i am i guess

This is one topic where I feel so weird here… yeah, when I was young I was always listened to music, but for that past couple decades (I’m 54), just barely.

I remember many years ago when my little brother (17 years younger than I) came over with 2,200 songs on his laptop, and I was like… omg… that’s like, every song in the world!

When I’ve got the radio on (shower, car, kitchen), it’s news/talk, and sometimes in the car some 60s/70s music station.

Sad for a “musician”… but then again, I was always a tech guy before the f’in musicians dragged me into this band thing…

i'm a lazy music listener ... a new song for the coverband, in the car, or background noise while I do chores. That's about it.

I don't actively seek out or even purchase music anymore. Heck I don't even manage my pandora account like I used to. Not too long ago i picked sevaral generic genere stations and just "quick mixed" them

I listen to stuff that I like or that I have to learn. I buy a lot of new music. There are currently just over 4,000 songs on my iPod.

At one point I was listening to whatever I could find. Now not so much. Like I don't care at all for rap, motown or funk/r'n'b stuff.

I discovered that I really like classical music ( all of it ) during my studies in college, I also have a lot of jazz of all type and some very obscure music like Philip Glass stuff or John Cage. I also like a lot metal so have a lot of that too.

I just like music that catch my ear and make me say ... "what the f*** just happened ?"

I'm bad about this. I have a butt-load of music on my iPod, but the majority of it is either rock or some form of metal. I have a small amount of country, jazz, and folk on there, but primarily listen to the rock and metal albums. I've tried to expand my music palette, but it just rejects most everything that I throw at it.

I can honestly say I do not listen to everything. I don't like country. It can have good lyrics, most about heart break though. The music itself is very bland to me. I do not like the rap and POP that is out these days. Lol Wayne..? Disgust. I don't really care for most Spanish music. It's rather irksome to me. However I certainly do like more music than I don't.

Country I do like is Johnny Cash, and I can tolerate Kenny Rogers.
Japanese music is cool.
90s dance music is great to me
Drunken bums playing guitar is a personal favorite
Older metal, none of this super brutal nonsense.
I do like folk metal
Celtic music
Meditation like music, I like Clannad. They are Celtic and meditation-esq
Punk
Grunge
A hint of indie


I may or may have not missed something. But that is the gist of it. I usually don't listen to it daily. I listen to music by mood, so I try to make songs blend and than transition.

Most people will claim they listen to 'all kinds of music'... you know Country AND Western.

I try to listen to newer pop things, but I get discouraged. I don't have a need to know that music and a lot of it sounds like the old stuff I grew up with, but better recorded and with some newer FX. (BTW- I'm really having a hard time getting into the sound of pitch corrected vocals.)
In my younger days, I was drawn to the sound of 20th Century orchestral music, but now I'm finding peace and intellectual pleasure in Haydn and Mozart. Jazz has and always will be an important sound for me.

The no only genre I've stayed away from consistently is country AND western.

I go through phases, currently in my "alternative", hard rock, and "classic" rap/hip hop "phase"

I'm 57, grew up in the 60s and 70s, and I'm not afraid to admit it - I much prefer the music of my youth over the music from today. I have a rather small MP3 player, with 4 gig capacity, so I don't have a ton of music on it, but everything I have on it came out before 1990. No hip-hop, no pop, no country, no folk, no classical. Nothing but classic rock. I'm getting older, I don't have that much time left on this planet, so I'm going to listen to what I enjoy, and if it means missing out on other music, then so be it.

Oh, I do have some Sinatra in my player. I'll always have room for Ol' Blue Eyes!

I too have really gotten into Haydn and Mozart lately. Haydn in particular is one of the wittiest musicians of all time. And to think there was a time when I thought that that music was boring!

I listen to allot but dont like rap,pop,indie and am burnt out of classic rock. I listen to allot of folk, Americana, Alt-country,some bluegrass. That movement has allot of great stuff coming out of it now. I also am going back and getting into singer/songwriters I overlooked years before.

I think I was lucky to grow up with friends that have a different appreciation of music than me: I was into tex-mex because my uncles , if I wanted to have a beer that was the music that was played, then I was introduced to metal by a friend , the guitarist of my band back in the 90's introduced me to classical and flamenco, girlfriends have exposed me to a bunch of music that I would never listened by myself: Trova, Bachata and all romantic latin stuff. Talkbass opened my ears to Funk and R&B and I listen to modern pop because my 7 and 5 years old kids. I also travelled alot and nothing like enjoy the real music of that country, Ballenato en Colombia, Tango en Buenos Aires, Georgian in Russia.. I like all of my 380 songs in my ipod so my family does and only God knows what I will add next.

Ethnic: African, Georgian
...

Now that's funny.

'Ethnic' isn't a genre, and Africa is a very big place with a whole lot of wildly different cultures and musical traditions.

Maybe look in to that before congratulating yourself on your erudite listening habits.

I know a couple music hoarders like that. Guess when you can pirate it, it's easy to pick up 60GB, eh?
