Thumbs up How (musically) "famous" are you?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm new here, and thought this'd be an interesting way to know more about y'all.

Do we have some ringers here? Answer these questions vis-a-vis your "musical career," and feel free to give explanatory embellishment (for instance, for magazine/TV/radio questions, was the press outlet/show local/national/international?, etc.), drop names, etc..

Have you ever:

Been interviewed or quoted by a magazine or newspaper?

Been interviewed for, or lent memorabilia or other source materials to, a filmaker or TV show making a film/TV show about music?

Been interviewed for, or lent memorabilia or other source materials to, an author writing a book about music?

Appeared in a film about music, as yourself.

Had your photo printed in a magazine or newspaper?

Had your photo on the cover of a magazine?

Had your photo on a pull-out center poster or calendar in a magazine?

Written about music in a magazine/newspaper?

Written a book about music?

Been interviewed on radio?

Been interviewed on TV/webcast?

Performed (live) on radio?

Performed on TV/webcast?

Had your recorded music played on the radio?

Been signed to an independent label?

Been signed to a major label?

Gone on a statewide or regional tour?

Gone on a national or international tour?

Played in public (either jammed onstage or as part of the band/act) with a nationally or internationally famous musician?

Opened for or been (lower) on the same bill as a nationally or internationally famous musician, on the same stage at a single stage-venue at a single-day show?

Opened for or been (lower) on the same bill as a nationally or internationally famous musician, at a multi-stage or multi-venue or multi-day show/festival?

Had a nationally or internationally famous musician or band open for you, at a single-stage venue and a single-day show, before they became famous?

Had a nationally or internationally famous musician or band open for you, at a single-stage venue and a single-day show, after they became famous?

Signed an autograph.

Been recognized as a musician outside of one of your shows or someone else's shows (like walking down the street or at the laundromat or something) by someone you don't know.

Charted on radio play or internet play charts?

Remember, all of the above must be in the context of your "musical career." So, for instance, if I've been interviewed or quoted in a magazine on some legal issue because I'm a lawyer, that doesn't count.

Go!

Can't tell- you didn't follow my rubric. DEETS! I need details.

Simple yesses and nos will turn this into a poll. That doesn't really tell us anything.

I appreciate you responding, however.

I have performed on TV and been interviewed on radio as part of a band.

The same band was signed to EMI - a major label over here!

Iirc the Sex Pistols even wrote a song about it!

The label, I mean, not your band being on it.

Tell us about this appearance on telly. Top of the Pops? Ready Steady Go? Masterpiece Theatre? Benny Hill?

Did you mime, play live, or some combination?

We played on the Kid Jensen show in the 80s - met Jensen and were interviewed by Pauline Black who was singer in the Selecter..?

We recorded the sound live in a studio in the morning then did the video in the afternoon, while miming on the sound stage in Southampton - it was quite fun miming and all these people watching - knowing you couldn't really make a mistake!!

Haha, thanks, I can be a real pest, can't I?

Now answer all the questions in the OP!

And to be fair, I promise I'll answer some as well in a few minutes.

I was out on a date with this chick that I really liked. She wanted to stop at a mall on our way to dinner. We were just getting off an escalator and some dude comes up and starts gushing all about how much he loves my band... Didn't impress the chick though.

Charted on radio play or internet play charts? Yes. That's one of those clippings I wish I would have saved

As a percussionist I performed at an event that was filmed by Oprah's cable TV "O Network", and the footage ended up on NBC national news including a total closeup of me mugging a silly face while soloing on the bongos. I had friends and family all over the country call up and say "you were on the news!"

Also if you go to Baracoa Cuba and ask about the one crazy bearded white bongocero with the tattoos, they will say they remember me.

Thumbs up

Here's a few answers to my own questions to bump the thread, more later:

Have you ever:

Been interviewed or quoted by a magazine or newspaper?

Yes, at least half a dozen times. Local paper (Gainesville Sun), the University of Florida paper (The Alligator), local community college paper, regional music magazine ("Ink 19"), local "alternative newsmonthly" (Satellite magazine), some others I'm forgetting.

Been interviewed for, or lent memorabilia or other source materials to, a filmmaker or TV show making a film/TV show about music?

Yes. A local musician filmmaker is working on a documentary about the birth and growth of the Gainesville (Florida USA) music scene. I lent him some old video, and also was filmed for it.. Presently it remains unreleased, and sfaik, unfinished.

Been interviewed for, or lent memorabilia or other source materials to, an author writing a book about music?

No.

Appeared in a film about music, as yourself.

Not yet, although, as noted above, there's footage of me taken for an as-yet unreleased documentary.

Had your photo printed in a magazine or newspaper?

Many times.

More later!

That does sound fun. You could really emote without fear of a mess up.

Of course, if the playback malfunctions, you could end up doing a jig.

In interviews I often try to say really over-the-top outlandish things, especially on radio. It immediately does two things-- first and foremost it shows that you don't take yourself too seriously. Second, it makes it fun for the interviewer, which in turn makes for a more entertaining read/listen.

Well if that didn't impress her, she wasn't one you wanted anyhow!

Baracoa, is that where barbecuing was invented?

I have been on local TV. I used to play tenor sax in a community band. We played a gig and the local TV station recorded us. They recorded all of our public gigs.

For one song three of us had a "solo". Rather than sitting in our normal place we stood up near the front wearing huge sombreros.

For a while after that, the TV station used that clip quite often as filler. People who knew me kept mentioning that they had seen it. I don't have a TV, so I never got to see it. Probably a good thing

A good many people who are 'famous' usually prefer to remain anonymous.

Unfortunately a good many people who are not famous prefer to find ways to appear famous.

If more people chased the art over fame there's be a lot more quality music out there.

I'm as famous as my name appearing in the phone book has made me. You know, that kind of spontaneous publicity really makes people...
