How musicians reach their own sound?

Sign in to disble this ad
Last days I wondered this, just when we think everything is invented, comes a new musician to the world stage and get his/her signature sound, that sound when you hear a record, and immediately know who is playing (Marcus Miller, Santana, to name just a few..)

I think IMO Hadrien Feraud is one of those new Players who reached his own sound, (I Know he's highly influenced by Jaco and Matt Garrison) but I can assure you that i could identify him in a recording.

Which do you think is the reason for this? Technique? own creativity? gear?

Personally it's really a lot of trial and error. But it helps to have a goal to start with, then tweak from there.
Happy hunting,
Dirk
