How old is too old?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all! I have wanted to play bass as long as I can remember but never did for various reasons. I am 45 years old and have zero experience with music. I have searched the forums and found a few guys that say they started bass in their 40's or 50's but they had experience with other instruments. The more I read this and other forums the more I think that maybe the boat has sailed on learning an instrument. Anyone here start playing their first instrument in their 40's? I'm not looking to be in a band or be a rock star but just looking to have some fun. What do you guys think?

Of course you can!! You are never too old to play music (or start learning it). Go for it . It will be a unique experience, your personal "journey", no matter your progress and level, as long as you enjoy doing it. Cheers.

I might add that I'm 57, have been playing since 1965 and I learn something new every day. No matter what level you aspire to (or reach), playing is a great creative outlet and is tons of fun.

You have to start when your 15. Sorry, other wise you don't get to learn the handshake. j/k, I say go for it because the feeling you get when pulling off a really cool lick can't be beat.

You won't find anyone here on TB that will tell you otherwise. As long as your fingers still move you can enjoy the bass.

I started at 50 and find I love it more than I even expected. I have been playing a little over a year. If you want to play, give it a shot...I had no music experience for over 30 years. Never played a guitar...

Everyone will think you are a "seasoned professional" - you won't have to get over that "oh - he is too young to know anything/know better!"

We have a pastor who started at our church who is in his late 50s...he has only been a pastor for a year or so (after seminary) but everyone just assumes he has been a pastor all of his life and gives him the respect he is due...I think it will be the same with you....

GO FOR IT!

HAVE FUN!

BASS = GOOD TIMES!

That's why I can't get into a metal band even though I cut my bass teeth on bands like Accept. lol... Keep up, junior... if you can.
