I think I was 15 if I remember correctly. I'm now 26 and I've never been happier as a bassist.

12--I bought one of those Squier bass packages with bar mitzvah money. I had my bar mitzvah before I turned 13.

My dad is a drummer. Figured bass was better than nothing I was adamant about not moving drums (having helped since I was 5) but I don't think I came out ahead.

I "started" when I was 16, and 19, and 25, and 48. 48 was the only one that stuck. I need to vote multiple ages, man...

13. Middle school jazz band needed a bassist. Our teacher was announcing open instrument positions and she said "any takers?" for the electric bass, which was answered with silence because nobody else wanted it and I was too timid to volunteer. My girlfriend back then, who was sitting several rows behind me, cleared her throat extremely loud to nudge me into it, so I raised my hand. That was nearly 15 years ago.

She probably doesn't even remember doing that, but I'll always love her for it. She's a lesbian now.
