How to sell? Consignment?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've never had good experiences selling stuff on ebay, shipping especially has been a nightmare.

Craigslist has been okay to me, but I've only sold inexpensive stuff there & my house is a mess & I don't want people over (though the bass gear is in a closet & very well protected). I'm considering consignment at a local music shop.

The marketer in me wants to sell here or on craigslist, but the "just want to have it taken care of for me & don't want people over my house" in me wants to sell consignment.

What are your opinions on selling consignment?

I've sold a few things at a local small guitar shop (Mark's, oddly enough). They take 25% for saving you the hassle of bouncing checks, people that cal and don't show up and all the BS associated with selling stuff. It saves you a lot of hassle but costs you a few $. This helps support a great little local small business...

They also check out anything you sell so it protects the buyer too, they won't sell anything that's defective at all. They give the buyer a week or 10 days to return it if they aren't happy with it.

partly it comes down to do you need all the $$ for whatever you're selling.

the consignment scam i remember is when the guy uses your stuff to make his look good......."for a few bucks more you get a warranty"kind of thing.....consignment stuff costs the dealer nothing to stock

i had another guy here that alway had to go downstairs to get an acoustic i had there, then i realized that was where the lessons happened and he was letting the students use it.......not to demo but to practice on

i was so mad that i demanded it back as well as a flute i had there and watched as he was on his hands and knees looking for it under the counter (not in the display area but actually under)...turns out that he farmed it to another store that was more into hs band stuff....i got it back and sold it myself.....the puke is still in business but i think floundering and i'll gladly name him for anyone that asks or may deal with him

....a third guy sold an ovation i had there then never seemed to be around when i came for my cash.....i actually had to track him down

Craigslist. Just meet the buyer at a third-party location...or put an amp in the garage and let him try it there. You don't need to let a buyer into the house to see what you own.

Typically, I will sell outright to Dave at Dave's Guitar Shop in Wisconsin. He's very fair and the next buyer gets a smokin' deal. I'm all for helping the next guy out. I have sold 1 here on TB and I got a couple hundred more than selling outright but it took longer. I tried selling on consignment thru Dave as well and it worked out fine but I still had to lower the price to sell.
