How would have handled this????

A group got up to sing Sunday and their bass or piano player wasn't there. They are very talented singers, and motioned for me to help out. I didn't mind going up along with an older lady (piano player) I've been playing with the choir and we get the chord it's in and the rest is by ear.

Anyways, the piano player isn't comfortable with the song and the singer tells me the piano player isn't going to play but he wanted me to just play the bass. Ah, ok...now what do I do? She hit a key they agreed and told me Ab, I don't know what is was but it wasn't Ab. Instead of looking for the right key I sat there and did nothing. These guys are great singers but none of them play instruments so I guess they don't know a bass doesn't sound very well with just singing. They did a good job singing without music. I talked with the singer after and complimented him on a good job.

The church isn't huge (350-400 people) but I really was at a loss at what to do. Maybe someone more advanced could have came up with something, I had never played the song. For me I think I did the right thing. So what would you have done in the same situation? Is there something I could have done that would have worked?

LOL. What else could you do. If they are talented, you may have just made them look bad trying to figure out what was up.
No good deed goes unpunished.
