How would you define the role bass plays in the funk genre?

i pretty much need to be able to sum it up in a few sentances for a oral presentation for music. But im having trouble coming up with more than "extremely important", or just rambling on saying stuff that only makes sense to me

help would be awesome.
thanks guys

The bass line in funk is like the preacher's pulse.

I see bass as about equally important in next to all music styles. It's just the character of the bass lines in funk that makes you believe it's more important in funk than in other genres. Perhaps it's because many funk songs are built upon the bass line, which is not very common in other music genres, where the bass generally is more of a support instrument.

In the genre of funk, which is typified by syncopated rhythms, the bass plays an exceptionally important role setting the pulse of the song, in either unsion with, or a counterplay with the drums. While still true, this is not as true with songs and rhythms done in more common, less syncopated, time.
