How would you go about writing the music....

To a song with the lyrics already done?

I know it is much easier to write the music then the lyrics, but it is really hard to get my band together so I just write lyrics for when I'll be able to eventually use them.

So in order to fit the style, mood, or message of the lyrics, how would you go about writing the music?

If you need to, I can post the songs that I want to write music to.

Thank for reading!

I just pick a guitar, play random chords and try to sing along, eventually the melody will come.

don't know how others did it.

What if cant play guitar, let alone chords?

Also I think posting our genre would help. We (read: I would LIKE us to be) are a Funk-Metal-Techno-Raw Rock-Destructive-Melodic-Experimental band.

It helps if there's already a melody (or rhythym, in the case of death metal vocals) to start from. After that, dip into your bag o' riffs that haven't been put to a song yet, and try them out 'til something works.

Or just start playing randomly until whoever wrote the lyrics starts getting ideas.

Personally, I prefer writing when the lyrics exist already. I have a large bag of unused riffs and chord progressions that just won't get used otherwise.

is it possible to be a bass player without being able to play guitar to a least a basic level?

when writing songs the bass guitar is a great way to do it...you have the melody ..the bass and the rythm all in one instrument...you dont need a guitar....just jam it and have the rest going on in your head including adding the lyrics.

Well, let me re-phrase, I can play guitar sort of, I just dont know any of the basic chords.

I am going to go about trying to make the music to some of the songs tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes.
