Hum from cable or jack?

Sign in to disble this ad
I hope this is the right place, and that you guys will be kind. My problem is this: There is a noticable hum when I turn on, and it changes in volume/frequency when I mess with the cable connection on either end.
My assumption would be a faulty cable, but my bass took a pretty hard knock and that could also be the problem. I just don't know. Is it worth taking it to a tech or should I just buy/try a new cable first?
Thanks.

Thanks for all your input. I didn't think my question was that dumb.
Not all of us are technically inclined...
I bought a cable from the new store in town, and that solved the problem.

It was an honest question.

I see the issue and thus the question as legitimate, I do not however understand that you only had 1 instrument cable in order to begin troubleshooting. This would be the obvious, and easiest first step in order to narrow down the possibilities of what was causing your problem. Cables fail, period. You really need to have back up. Now perhaps you can repair the faulty cable, and have it on hand as a spare for next time. And know there WILL be a next time.
