Check out Musolist.com. Last time I looked there were lots of bass player wanted ads for the Edmonton area.

Welcome to town!

Check out open stages around town. Generally that's a good to way to check out some musicians, meet them face to face and see what they're all about. There are a few small music festivals around too. I find those a good way to hook up with people.

Welcome.

Wow, this has kinda caught me off gaurd. Its made me realize how little I know about a city I have lived in for eighteen years.... hmmm, does anyone have any tips for me?

I really dont know much about the Edmonton Music scene, aside from it being mostly indie folk and hardcore music, as far as I have seen. I really would like to get more involved in the scene sometime soon.

Hmmm.... thats not very helpful.... sorry...

I imagine there are some open mics/jams that you can go to and meet musicians.

If you are into metal, check out albertametal.net for wanted ads.

You could also try kijiji for musician classifieds.

Oh, and it is my duty as a Calgarian to rip on Edmonton at this point. Edmonton sucks

Is this a permanent move?

There are a couple of great gear shops on or near Whyte Ave, including one called Avenue Guitars, which is (was?) something of a meeting spot for many musically diverse folks. Blues on Whyte is a blues jamming institution and a good place to meet fellow players. Good luck with the move, *The Chuk sports some great music culture.
*colloquilism for Edmonton, originating from its substantial Ukranian populace...

Avenue is nice, but they try to fit three stores worth of inventory in half a store.

I might have to stop by Blues on Whyte, I am too out of touch with the local music scene.

Jones!

That's my sister-in-law's band!
Small world. . .

Edmonton has always had a way cooler music scene than it had any right to have. I left back in '86, but got to play with PJ Perry, Bob Tildsley, Bill Emes, Wayne Feschuck, and many more great jazz players. Some of them are still around. . .

Don't know much about the scene there now, but I bet you'll find a way to fit in.

best,
Laurence

I forgot to ask what is the live music scene like. I have found out that in Southern Illinois it is Country/ Classic rock or Black Death Stoner Metal. Whats happening in the Chuk??

Edmonton's scene has always been pretty good - As a Calgarian I can say it's better than the Calgary scene has been in *years*, so be glad you're not trying to break in here :P.

+1000 for the guitar shops on Whyte - they GAS me every time I'm up there.

I wouldn't know about Edmonton's scene, but +1 on the crappy scene here in Calgary.
