I am officially a band jumper

So after 4 years of being committed to one band, I have decided to sell myself and become a cover/session guy. At one point I was playing in 2 bands. But at this point I am technically in 3 bands. An original metal band, an 90's alternative cover band, and a 80's new wave cover band.

The metal band is pretty much done, but I am willing to keep playing with them if something comes up. The 90's band has its first gig this weekend. We are playing a private party for a former reality show contestant. The house is on the beach and he is taking us on his speed boat!! Getting paid to play and hang out sounds like something I could get used to. The 80's group is still auditioning male lead singers. But so far everyone is seasoned and easy to deal with. And its very part time (1-practice every 3 weeks). And looking to gig no more then once a month for $200 plus a guy.

I'm over the whole "music integrity" thing. Honestly the only styles I am avoiding playing are strict classic rock covers and blues.

Its actually been a lot of fun learning 40 plus songs. Most are very easy. But every once and a while I find a song I really dig. Like the Go Go's song Vacation. Man it has some neat chord changes and a sweet walking type bass line in the chorus. On top of that I am doing a lot of back ups for the first time.

So where are my fellow sluts at!

Let's see:

I'm in Acoustic Highway, a folk / country / gypse / jazz band.

I'm in Taylor Martin, a folk / hippie crossover duo.

I've just started Synchronicity III, the Police tribute band....

And, even though I live in Fresno, I'm still in my San Diego 80's - 90's cover band Rare Form.

OK. I'm a band slut too!

PS. When I read the title of the post, "Band Sluts", I must admit I was thinking something... well... different!

LOL!! I know how to get guys attention

That is awesome. Love the Police! How do you do it? You must have a blackberry to stay organized. Do other members give you a hard time about whoring it up ?

I think that it would make one a better player, as long as they actually practice at home.

LOL!! Thanks I do have some liberal friends and would like to avoid upsetting them.

So what's the deal??? I feel that as long as you deliver the goods that you should be able to play with whom ever you want. I guess the inevitable double bookings can come up. But unless I am getting $200 a night, sorry I'm still for hire.

I'm such a slut that we actually named our band The Sluts.

The Sluts - three piece cover band. We play "Guilty Pleasures" tunes, the cheesier the better. We also do a "stump the band" thing where we try to play at least a minute of people's requests. We play the same house gig once a month.

Kung Fu Rodeo - original festival band. Very eclectic. My main gig.

The Lucas Paul Band. This is a cover band, mainly does high dollar wedding and club gigs.

I also play solo acoustic gigs on guitar and vox.

Definite slut right here! But then again, if you're anywhere near half decent on bass in my town, you'll be offered more work than you can take.

Currently, I'm working with:

a Funk/R&B group (Phil Wiseman)
a female singer/songwriter (Tyler Guthrie)
a Coldplay-ish type of group (Home By Hovercraft)
an "Americana with a groove" type group (Andy Barham Band)
3 Blues/Rock cover/some originals bands (Reese Perkins/Stone Soup/Chris Tondre)
and I sub for 3 or 4 others.

If only all of that paid well enough for me to not need a dayjob...

I'd love to be a slut, if I were good enough that anybody would want me!

I'm #15 on the list of Top 10 Bass Players in my locale!

Link me to some videos/recordings as soon as you do some!!

Personally, I'd definitely love to be a sessions bassist rather than a band member. I don't really like the strings that are attached with being in a band. Admitted that's just one negative point against numerous plus points but for me it outweighs the others.

It wouldn't bother me to play in multiple bands, either, if I found the time!

If you want to play in more projects, audition for them. Your own lack of faith in your abilities is holding you back. We are our own worst critics. You may not play like Victor Wooten, or you may not be able to noodle endlessly with the rest of the show-offs in Guitar Center. That doesn't matter. If you can find the grove and show you can play in the pocket, you'll do fine. Even if a band turns you away, chalk it up to not being a good fit with the players and move on to the next project.

And Oh Yes. I WILL have vid when the Synch III performs. We're just putting it together so it will be a month or two before we're on the stage. I can't freaking wait!!!!!

The Music Business ( Semi-Pro and Pro) is all about building connections.
I've played in about 12 or so bands since i first started out 5 years ago, in most genres. I'm Currently In 6 bands, a duo, and a regular sub in 3 other bands. Lovin' it.

...it's a sign of the times. I mean, who isn't involved in multiple "bands"/projects?!?

As I always mention in those threads about "Playing Today vs. Playing in the Good Ol' Daze"-
In the '80s, you could not freelance as easily because the ONE band you were in played pretty much every weekend + a couple of nights during the week. Add in a rehearsal a week & your time is spent.
...even my HS 'mid-'70s garage band gigged 2-3 weekends/month.

I appeared with about 30 different billable acts, last year.

It keeps me interested and it keeps rent paid, so folks can call it whatever they like.

If the BLs don't like it, they're free to try and find players that are monogamous and capable. I have no objections to that, whatsoever. (But you might want to keep my number for when that new "steady" dude needs a sub. )

I play 95% covers and love doing it. You haven't sold out - you've just discovered reality. Enjoy!

I'm like that too! I play for young up-and-comming pop singers. Most of them won't make it to the top, but I get paid anyways, so ha!
