I can see spending $1K on a bass, but...

On a pickguard? An old, beaten-up one with a piece broken off and glued on? Just because it MIGHT have been on an old P-Bass? I don't care if Jesus Christ himself played it, there's no way I'd pay that kind of dinero for a pickguard!

If Jesus Christ himself played it you can sure as hell bet I would pay that kind of dinero for a pickguard...because then I'd turn around and instantly sell it for 10x what I paid! People will do all kinds of crazy things for the stuff Jesus used...you know how much you could get for the Shroud Of Turin? Now imagine what you could charge if you had the matching pump and handbag that went with it.

I'm pretty sure those old pickguards sound better than new ones...

This calls for Dan to do some blind sound clip tests with different pickguard materials. I'm certain that tone-plastic has a subtle but important effect on sound.

12 years of Catholic school and I never once heard of the Pump or Handbag of Turin. I feel cheated.

I don't think that $1K is too much to ask, just too much to pay.

Out of curiosity, how much would people be willing to pay for said shroud?

Depends if it's MIM, MIJ, or MIA. I can ignore it being road-worn - that just adds character.

It says "Vintage" in the title. It must be worth thousands.

IF you can say it's "ALL Original" you get more money than you would for the same guitar with non original or vintage parts - even if it's broken, glued back together and missing a piece..
Y'all need to watch Pawn Stars or American Pickers more often, LOL ...
Seriously though, there are "experts" that can tell a 1962 Fender pick guard from a 1992 Fender pick guard.
If paying a grand for a pick guard that is the right vintage will boost the value of my 62 Fender another 2500.00. Yeah, I'll pay that and more than double my return.
But it all boils down to "what the Market will bear" if someone is willing to pay X amount for something then the others will/might sell for around the same. That's how a market value is arrived at on older discontinued models like a Spector NS-2A or an Ibanez SR1200 - both are discontinued models and both currently sell for between 350 - 650 (not so often at 650).
Sometimes better deals can be had on them. I paid 275 for my NS-2A...

Isn't it true, though, that if you had a complete all-original '62 Fender, you'd make more money by selling its parts than you would by selling it whole?

Well I may be alone, but there is nothing like that toneplastic vintage tone. You wan't your bass to sound good, here is your chance.

Best metal bass? Buy a vintage pickguard.

I'm sure I read some where that Jesus took his pickguards off.

Not necessarily... again, depends on if someone is willing to pay the price.

Anybody else notice how nasty the guy's hand were holding the pickguard? Look's like he hadn't washed in weeks.

That settles it. I suspected all along Jesus played a P bass. (With flats of course) Does this mean that MIJ stands for made in Jerusalem?
