I was outside grilling yesterday and I saw my neighbor spray painting something that he had hanging in his garage. After observing for a few minutes I realized what he was doing. A few months ago he bought a Fender Road Worn Strat, and he was spray painting it. I was a bit confused, but it is his guitar and his money. |

| | | | At least it was a guitar... But seriously? So much of the value of the road worn series comes from the "roadwornness" of it.

But.
I don't think I could play something that was reliced in a factory, not by 40-odd years of playing. My new basses should look new, and slowly become beaten up.

To me refinishing a road worn could only improve the way it looks. Fake wear is fake. I'm not a fake, and neither are my instruments. Quote:

| | | | The Road Worn basses that I have seen do not look that bad to me, but the guitars on the other hand looked aweful. The fretboards looked like someone took a belt sander to them. But, would it de-value a road worn by spray painting it? I would think so. If it was me and I decided that I didn't like it, I would maybe try trading it for something else even if it meant taking a loss. To each his own though. |

| | | | Meh...it's not some priceless historic relic, it's just a Fender...and a Strat at that.

A fresh bass can easily turn my head, but I generally associate unbroken jeans with a certain cultural naivety -- at the risk of being branded too metrosexual.

A relic finish is every bit as "fake" as a normally painted one, and no one should have to "earn" the finish choice they prefer. |

I should note that 501's don't even fit until they've been worn and washed at least twice...so they do get into the "worn in" category pretty quickly.
As a point of interest, you may be too young to recall that in the mid-60's, jeans were most prized while they still looked UN-washed. Tastes and fashions change. To me, once they get holes in them they're for working on the car and doing yard work.
