I sold a true voice pre amp to a TB'er and when I shipped it, It worked as it was designed. When the buyer got it he did not like how hot and noisy it was so he told me it needed to be repaired and asked me to pay for the repair. I have never sold anything that did not work properly when it left me so I figured I should do the right thing and paid him. Now after paying him I find he had it modified to work like he wanted it to on my dime. Do you think this is right?

I've had similar experiences selling pedals on ebay...guy buys a pedal which works as it should, but it doesn't make him sound like Jimi or SRV or whoever so he cries to PayPal and gets a refund...PITA |

| | | | That was totally dishonest of the person to do that. Post his TB user name here if he doesn't refund your money. Anybody who pulls a scam like that should be exposed for who, and what they are.
This is why whenever I put ads on Craigslist, I require the buyer to come get it. I go over every last detail of the gear I'm selling, and give them a chance to hear it right on the spot. Anyone doesn't like that, they can keep looking.
Sorry you got scammed man. I hope you do get your reair money back. |

Maybe it's less prevalent than with ebay, but the incidence appears to be increasing. I've seen some fairly storied people here get called out after a bad deal and then just disappear. These kinds of threads usually get closed fairly quickly, unfortunately.
Anyway, I agree with the craigslist suggestion. Local and face to face. I have dealt here before, but there is a very short list of people I'd buy from/sell to at this point.

Mike | You should deal only with people who have at least 16,000 posts.
