I drive a Datsun '79 Sunny...

And I installed a new Sony CD player/stereo head today!
Cost $139AUD, so just a simple and affordable one.

Unfortunately I only have enough money to upgrade the head, so the car still has its stock speakers, which, at first, sounded shocking. Everything had a really piercing, squealing edge to the sound and gave me and my girlfriend a headache.

I fiddled around with the EQ, and all the other settings, and finally, I got a combination that absolutely rocked!
Took me a while to figure out, that if I just cut the mids (by about -10, dunno the units) the sound quality became really even, the bass came through really well, and the general trebles/mids stayed intact and clean, and now I'm really happy! I use a Sony mp3 Walkman by the way, and the sound quality is awesome.

Eventually, I will upgrade the speakers, and get something with a little more bass-support.

Sorry, I don't have pictures of the car or the stereo head just yet!

The car, at the moment, remains untouched XD
The head was screwed in just under the glove box.

I was joking about the Datsun. I had a ute that was the last year of Datsun before they became Nissan. I miss that car, except for the noise, rust, and repairs every year. It had a great stereo too; the best part of that bomb was the stereo.....

Yeh? Must have been killer, my one isn't so flash.
Actually this car was mostly garaged by a family friend, who is a mechanic, for many many years, it has really minimal wear and use, and since it was unused for so long, he gave it to my dad, which then I somehow inherited.

just a thought - when you do switch out the speakers, do yourself a favour and install componet speakers. don't go for the 4 way ones you put in the shelf at the back of the car. your sound will be more crisp if you go component.
Personally I also installed a small compact subwoofer beneath the drivers seat. mainly because I don't have much spare room. having to transport all kinds of funny things in that stationwagon.... but it does give that low rumble that people usually crave in car stereos.
oh and don't go over the top. 400 watts is plenty. more than that is just plain silly in a car. what's the point in loading 15000 watts in a car if you can't sit in it while the stereo plays ? besides I guess you would shake that old Datsun to pieces

Are imports that slow to arrive in Australia, they've been rebadged as Nissan, already!

Datsun photo, please?
