I found something common among many guitarists I like

Almost all of them play PRS. The guys from Opeth, the guys from Orphanedland, even Santana. A lot of prog. metal bands use them, and so do quite a few people from many other genres.

I also figured out why

You can get 1 PRS and do decent country, blues, jazz, metal, rock, etc. on it. I know they are very versatile, and sound very good in a lot of styles.

This is probably sounding like an ad by now lol.

Anyone here play PRS? If so, whatcha' think of them? I think I might make a PRS SE my first guitar this summer after I get a new bass and another cab ( that is, if Wal-Mart will hire me full-time night shift ).

They are amazing, but damn expensive... Extremely versatile indeed, as you've noticed. Damn, I still feel sorry that I couldn't go to the concert of Al di Meola when he was here... =/

To me, they are wonderfully crafted instruments that sound like a Les Paul. I can't listen to a song and say, Oh that's a PRS!

You can with a strat/telly, Les paul.

It's a glorified Les Paul and everyone plays one now!

Yes, they a great, but unique tone, I dont think so.

PRS sound like a mixture between a strat and a les paul to me, and sometimes a bit like a tele depending on the model.

i don't have one, but i've played many. they're consistently easy to play. very smooth and solid.

fenders and gibsons, while having very distictive sonic flavours, vary greatly in their feel.

There are similarities tone-wise to many artists that I like.

I don't think the brand name has much to do with anything. A good & likeable guitarist is going to provide a rythym & tone you can latch onto, or that you want to jam to.

Chops are also fine, but the groove & destination are better indicators of likeability than what kind of guitar they play.
