I got a free piano needs a little work though.

So I got a free piano yesterday from a family that wanted to get rid of it since no one uses it anymore.

Some of the keys are sticking. The little hammer dealys kind of stay up when you press some of the keys in. Also one or two notes don't sound at all. It probably needs a bit of a tuning.

Is it going to be expensive to get these repairs done to it.

Depends on two factors really. How is the sounding board? And is the pin block cracked? Those two are nearly fatal on a piano. Have someone come out to look at it, tune it and talk about overhauling it. Pianos are expensive instruments.

Gotta agree with pac there, even getting them tuned isnt exactly cheap. But id definatley get someone out to have a look at it.

Hi.

Add another vote for a professional repair quote.

Make sure You sit down when he/she gives it. By the looks of it, it won't be on the cheap side.

Pianos are like uprights though IMO, even a cheap one set up well, is a joy to play and listen.

BTW have You Googled the make and model?

It seems to me that everything is intact pretty much although I haven't really stuck my head into it yet.

I doubt that it was used very much. just kept in the living room gathering dust. i'll have a closer look at it when I get home.

If it's above a few hunderd euros to get this thing sorted I dunno if it will be worth it. It's not something i want to take too seriously.

where exactly is the sounding board located by the way.

I guess there's no such thing as a free piano

I've never run across a piano (other than a few brand new ones) that only needed "a little" work. They're like dominoes. Look out, and good luck.

I don't like the way this going the repair guy will hopefully be out sometime this week to see what really needs to be done.

Still though I got to have a little fun with it tonight. I learned the first left hand part of compte d'un autre ete. It's a lovely little piece of music. I can see using two hands is going to be fun.

I had a google all right. It's made by ryalls and jones. It didn't turn up anything at all.

There's two dates written inside of it one with "keep to C522 and 21 -11 - 52" the other is someones name and "30 mar 1990" Which I'm assuming is the last time someone looked inside the thing.

Whatever happens, you'll survive. Pianos have a lot of "mechanization", that's all......
