I hate memorizing lyrics

While I LOVE singing and playing, I HATE memorizing lyrics. I find myself purposely repeating lyrics in songs and asking the guys to write instrumentals. It seems the old I get the lazier I become lol. To my credit, I have ADHD which makes memorizing lyrics much more difficult than it does for the average Joe. Just needed to vent and get validated that maybe some other people hate memorizing lyrics too...

p.s. I never cheat and put lyrics on the floor at shows!!

Don't memorize, internalize! Make that song your story, for its entire 3+ minute duration. It's you; it's your life. Even if you aren't even singing, play it like it's your story!

Imagine an actor on a stage or screen, just reciting lines back. Now imagine that same actor, living the part, becoming the character. It's the same with music. Just as a great actor "owns" the part, a great musician "owns" their song. That's a far cry from simple memorizing.

I burn CDs and play the band's list in the car whenever I'm driving. Helps to internalize it, though yeah, have to sit down with a lyric sheet at some point.

I hate practicing. I hate doing homework, exercizing, getting up early, sticking to my diet. But all these things are means to an end.

There are memory tricks. Besides just repetition, there are lots of ways to break the song into sections and then fill in the blanks. So, you might be able to memorize faster than simply "by rote". That doesn't mean it will be fun though. It's still work.
