But that is better than trying a bass somewhere, and the salesman decides he should impress you with his wankerism. He picks up the bass, plugs it in, and then goes on a 3 minute solid wank/slap/crap/tapfest. I actually walked out of a GC once before I even got to pick up the bass!

Ain't that the truth! I hate that crap, and it is the main reason that I tend to avoid Guitar Center.

i used to be the same.
Theres usually only a volume, pickup balance, bass, mids and treble.
But i never understood the role of a "tone" knob. what the hell does it actually do?

They're not ALL bad, but I've seen that a number of times at my local Sam Ash. Actually, the Guitar Center in Tampa that I go to is usually staffed with some good, helpful people - the old Mars Music people, who were always friendlier and more helpful then the Sam Ash guys. Still, you'll find those wanker salesmen - can't stand 'em.

Edit: I just realized we're derailing the thread. Yes, I do hate it when I can't figure it out. Being a passive Fender guy for a while, I couldn't ever figure out what having four or five knobs could do. Eventually, I figured out what the EQ knobs on MusicMan basses were.

BZZZZT...it rolls off treble.

The "treble mids and bass all in one EQ" knob is usually labelled VOLUME

It's easy to tell what each knob does:

1. Play a note

2. Turn knob

3. Listen

Those ? are sometimes related to the piezos, i.e. piezo/magnetic blend or midi volume, etc. Most conklins I've seen have 7 knobs.
