I have an idea for a drumming stunt- how to pull it off?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had this idea for a while.

Basically I want to wait until I am gigging and then before a gig fill the drumkit with gunpowder or some sort of explosive charge.

Then at the finale of the song I would drum the final beats of the song and then set alight the charges, creating pretty pyrotechnics.

Anyone know whether this is possible? How could I do it?

Yeah Moon did it and took out Townshend's hearing lol. But I heard that was because he put in a lot more than he should have...
I'm sure you could find out how if you looked around online or something.

Leave that crap to pros. I've messed with pyrotechnics, been bitten a few times. Not worth your musical career, or your life!

The story as I'd heard it back in the day was that Moon was hanging with the technician who was loading the pyro cartridge in the kick drum and giving him multiple nips from a hip flask ---IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: DON'T WORK WITH EXPLOSIVES WHILE BEING GIVEN ALCOHOL BY ROCK STARS--- so he go tthe tech to WAY overload the charge, but he maybe didn't know that. And he saw where the tech put the gunpowder and got some omore on his own and further overloaded it, thinking it would make a great pyro effect. In stead it made sort of a drum grenade and Rock and Roll history.

Didn't he sever a major blood vessel in his arm with part of a cymbal? Or is that just urban legend?

Regardless, if you really feel like doing something like this: Be BEYOND careful. I don't know if you watched The Who performance mentioned earlier on Youtube, but even that got a little out of hand with the addition of too much of the explosive. Regardless of whether cymbals did perhaps sever anything, it is true that Pete was deaf in one ear after that. My hearing is bad too, but I know if one ear is CLOGGED it drives me bonkers, to be permanently deaf in one ear... damn.

I would advise not doing it, but if your heart is set on it, seriously... verrrrrrrrrrry careful.

There is no way I can express what a BAD idea this is. it has tremendous potential to get people hurt or killed.

And specifically, DO NOT USE GUNPOWDER in any form. it is an explosive and its effects are not predictable except by experts. It also can leave powder burns which penetrate the skin and last for life.

If you felt like hooking up some firecrackers a safe distance behind the drum set - OUTSIDE - and letting them go off as you finished a number, that's different. (Although you could get arrested if they're not legal in your area.) But be prepared for the potential for someone to panic at what they might perceive as gunshots. You could get people hurt just from that panic.

There is 'way too much downside to this idea!!
