I have no idea what fun is

My dad has a stand at the flea market and I sell my accessories like strap, cords and gently read guitar and bass magazines. Since I play guitar and bass I subscribe to several bass and guitar magazines. When i am done reading them I sell them. I sold all the guitar mags and have only bass ones left. A man who had bought a few came looking for moere this week and found I was sold out. He asked me why I wanted to play bass after starting on guitar when no one notice the bass lines in a song only what the guitar player does. I said that bas bass player is the back bone of the band and that it is what drives the song along not bass like many people think. He gave me The Doors as an example. they never had a bass player and had lots of hits. I told him playing bass was fun and I like it much better than playing guitar. he told me I have no idea what fun is if I want to play the bass. Sounded like this man had a big guitar players ego and wanted to spout off at me. But there is a good saying that goes" To each his own." I made that clear in the conversation if thatts what you wanted to call it.

Idea what fun is

Tell the idiot that The Doors did indeed have a bass player. Jerry Scheff played on most (or a lot of ) their studio recordings. Only during live performances did The Doors not rely on a bassist. I made the switch from playing lead guitar to bass over 20 years ago and have been having "fun" with it ever since.

Tell him to tell Jaco Pastorious that bass playing isn't fun. I know Jaco is dead. It is just a figure of speech to make my point that there are hundreds of bass players of note who have a heck of a good time playing bass and have had distinguished careers doing so.

Almost every genre of music that uses bass guitars or upright basses have bass players who love what they do. This guy is just showing his ignorance as a musician.

You mean this is no fun?!?!!!????
DAMMIT!!!!
Alll that time and money and it's not gonna become fun!??!???
I was waiting for the fun to start rolling in any second now.
21 stinkin' years, sessions, tours and just to find out it isn't gonna get fun.
I feel robbed. I had two gigs today at this big outdoor festival. I thought I was having fun, but now it turns out I wasn't!!
Those sons-a-bitches are gonna pay for this!!!!!!!!!!!!

This would have been my response:

"Do you have brain damage?"

To me that's a fitting response to many things that people say that are absolutely ridiculous.

It always amazes me, people's capacity to tell others what they should think/feel/do... and then the complete shock occupanied by politely refusing the aforementioned thinking/feeling/doing.

I thought i was having fun learning some new Jimi Hendrix songs and improvising today, but it seems alas it was all in vein, i might aswell have been doing math as according to that man anything is more fun than playing the 'dirty' and 'pointless' bass.

I could swear but im not going oh well, 'egomaniac t**t'.

In other words, when playing in a band, this guy only listens to himself.

Some musicians are guitar players. Not all guitar players are musicians.

By the way I found that The Doors did record with a bass player, but that during live performances, one of the guys (can't remember who, the keyboardist) played keyboard with his right hand and keyboard bass with his left hand... Weirdos

And if you see him again, tell him that if the bass is such a crappy instrument, that no ones notices it, and that is no fun to play, how come there is a bass or double bass in EVERY band?

I don´t know about that but one thing is certain, The Doors sure had a bass player though he din´t play bass guitar. Ray Manzarek played bass simultaneously with organo by using floor bass pedals. THIS IS THE TRUTH.

Since playing bass isn't fun, bass players should be paid more than guitar players...
