I have seen the dark side...

...I played a gig last night as a drummer which had two guitarists, but no bass player. It was cool to focus on my kick drum and right foot technique, as that was the only low-end frequency, but...

...dang, we bassists make the music sound SO much better.

May the force be with you.

I once played a gig with a band that consisted of two guitarists and a female lead vocal. They had all their Drums, Bass, and keys recorded and playing on an ipod. They were basically a Nighwish rip off band and after the show I noticed that sure enough, one guitarist was wearing a Within Temptation T shirt.

I'm not sure how I feel about the iPod band thing. On one hand, it's not the coolest or most interactive thing in the world. On the other hand, it may be for location, logistics or otherwise the best way to have a full band sound, minus the complications (though there are plusses too) of having extra people.

I think it can be done successfully, and reaonably tastefully, given the constraints of the setup. I use the words "can be" instead of "is always"...

All I can tell you is that I'd have rather had the iPod bass player, or someone's left hand playing a bass patch/sound than nothing at all.
