I just bought a mandolin!!!!

I have been GAS-ing for a mandolin for years for no real reason and finally pulled the trigger on the top of the line Epiphone model. I got a great deal on a used MM-50 which is the F (scroll) style.

What a fun instrument to play! I spent hours today playing the Nigel solo in Stonehenge, Losing my Religion, some Pogues, Maggie May, etc.

I had not really tried to play one until today and within a few hours I can easily play major chords A-G and a few other little riffs/scales.

It is tuned really screwy (high E-G) which takes lots of time to get used to.

Anyone else out there play one of these things?

My good friend has a mandolin that I play when I'm over there. I love the sound, but I don't liek the playability. It's so small and the strings need to be real tense to sound good and it just turns me off from the instrument.

Hi.

I still occasionally play mine. About the only tune I've ever used mandolin live is the "Made In The Shade" by Lynyrd Skynyrd we used to play a many, many moons ago. I can get a similar feel with a 12-string so that was my main instrument.

Fun little buggers and a really easy and loud instrument to carry around.

Regards
Sam

I play the Irish bouzouki which I tune the same as a mandolin. That tuning should be familiar, just bass tuning backwards, but then I'm sure you knew that. It is also the same tuning as the fiddle which is makes it easier to play traditional Irish and Scottish folk tunes, I'm sure there are those who would disagree. Check out the web site below which gives hundreds of chord shapes for that tuning and others. It's for the bouzouki but the shapes apply the same on the mandolin. Enjoy!

very cool--I got a mandolin for christmas, and it is really fun! mine is tuned in 5th, GDAE, which is like a bass only upside down and its pretty cool--its fun to have a high register instrument to compliment my low register instrument!

Do the world a favor. Destroy it.

What's the definition of "perfect pitch"?

When you throw a banjo into a dumpster and it smashes the mandolin that's already there.

Cool. I've always wanted to get one and learn how to play it. Someday! Congrats, man.
