I just gave my 16 yr old daughter her first bass lesson

I got her a Cort Curbow 4 string, and a Pandora PX4B.
Went really well. She showed a lot of intrest. 2.5 hrs. worth
I had forgotten how hard it really is starting out. Really had to exercise my patience
Shes the one on the left

She's a cutie.

I'm 19 now, but I taught for 2 years. Assertive girls make good students. Submissive girls are too shy to play well in front of you. I guess the same goes for boys, but it seems a more pronounced difference in girls.

I can agree with the fact that she's cute.

Its great that shes interested in bass though; all the girls around here (I'm 17, so theyre all my age) are just interested in guitars because "they sound cool".

Cute girl.

Best of luck, I know how much patience it takes to teach a family member. I've taught both my father and brother to play guitar.

Doesn't look like the type to play a musical instrument, especially bass. Which makes that really cool that she wants to learn! Not a half bad bass to start off on either. Now all you have to do is tell her to keep practicing, and of course introduce her to TalkBass :P.

remember to teach her the basics!

1) when in doubt, slap slap slap, shred shred shred.

2) time isn't so important as making sure you can get as many notes in there as possible. If you end a little behind the beat, it's cool, just keep playing that way, it's everyone else's responsibility to compensate for you.

3) Don't let that guitarist hog the spotlight: drop the groove and start solo-ing! The guitarist may still try to solo in "their" spot, but don't let them; you should have a rig that is pushing at least 1000W, and use them!

4) In reference to 3, tone dosen't matter, just make sure you're louder than everyone else

5) Don't worry about musicianship. Instead, talk about how "overrated, stupid, whatever the "greats" are [read: Jaco, foster, geddy etc] and how you'd be so much better if the ______ in your band started stepping up.

6) music isn't about having fun, it's about winning.

And now I close the most irrelivant post I think I've ever done.

You've got a bonafide fox for a daughter, 00Funk.

Great that she wants to learn...and hey, that's certainly a better bass than I had starting .

I agree (also 16, so I'm not a pedo either).

The one ont he right is hotter, though. Maybe some pics of your daughter with her bass would change my mind...

First of all, to the young guys that are calling these girls hot... remember a few things: you're talking to their father. Even a few years older than you, I realize their beauty, but urge you to realize that any loving father, as 00Funk obviously is, would not appreciate the shallow comments you have made. I urge you boys to reconsider your phrasing.

Not to mention, keep it up and you'll end up with shallow girls, and I can assure you, there's nothing worse than a shallow relationship.

Grow up.
