I just sold the bass to some non bass youngsters

Was a funny thing.. i was round my sisters earlier and my dad was on the piano.. i brought the bass around and there were a few teenagers being daughters and sons of my sisters friends..im talking 18 - 23. i had a quick conversation about the role of a bass in music.. they said they hadnt really thought about it.... they were a mixed bag of hardcore house and Lady Gaga..(w
hich has some great disco bass lines by the way)
My Dad started playing a rendition of SummerTime up tempo.. i got the impression that they didnt think that it had much to offer until i stopped playing half way through...and started again... then they seemed to realise the important melodic, rythmic foundation that the bass has... "for me" i said, the bass is the most important instrument in most bands..( i felt like a frickin old twat) i went on to say it is the rythm and the harmony in one instrument..and whey were genuinely interested..they may just been being polite...

its easy to sit in the crowd and watch.. unless your a muso or a bassist, it takes a bit more effort to understand what goes into, not just bass playing, but instruments as a whole....and the effort emotion and thought that goes into playing and learning..

thats all i have to say about that matter..

I do something like that in one song with my rock band. I spend about 2 minutes doing nothing but hammering the low g in a straight 8th tempo during the guitar solo, then I stop it for a bar, then kick it back in. gets the message across

Does "twat" mean something different in the UK than it does in the States?

It has less of an anatomical connotation, and is more less jsut a synonym for bloke, geezer, etc.

You're right in that it doesn't have as much of an anatomical meaning, but used in that sense, it means idiot of some sorts.

For example, if I've just done something stupid I'll say "I was such a twat"

Don't know if that's what the OP meant, but that's what it means in these parts...

Misleading title. I thought you literally sold your instrument to some kids who don't play bass. I was like "Why the hell would you do that?"

Good story though. Hopefully your lessons will stick and you made an impact on my doomed generation. (I'm 24 myself, I know how ignorant a lot of kids can be)

It can go equally either way. Like ***hole (but less offensive).

It comes in just above "nobhead" and "arsehole".

Yeah that's what I thought too. Of my teenaged daughters, one listens to rock bands that play instruments, the other listens to all the over-produced autotuned pop crap. The funny thing is that she's the more committed musician of the two, practices piano and clarinet regularly while the other only occasionally bothers to get her guitar out. I never quite understood that.
