just a great musician and sing/songwriter. i really dig a lot of stuff that he does in his solo career as well as with the dire straits of course. no real point to this thread other than to share that clip and pay a little respect to mr. knopfler.

Knopfler is awesome!

I generally never could figure out how to describe tones to my guitar player, so in stead of saying, for example : " On this tune, I'll want a really clean guitar with a lot of reverb and just a smidge of delay." , I would say: "Give me the B52's 'Follow Your Bliss' on this one"

I referenced a LOT of Mark Knopfler tunes that way. He has the best clean tones ever.

I prefer him on a Strat, or Strat-like guitar to his sound on this Led Paul.

If I could play guitar like any guitar player in the history of music, it would be Mark Knopfler. He's one of my heroes...

As far as I'm concern he is right there with Gilmour and Gibbons!

Amazing guitar player.

Gibbons?

Are you talking about Billy Gibbons?

Knopfler is SO much better than him. Is there another Gibbons that I am missing out on, perhaps?

Of course

I love Billy Gibbons. I think he is a great guitar player, one of my favorites.

At least knoffler think like me, he asked Billy for some help on money for nothing.

He doesn't suck or anything, but it's been a long time since he did anything that particularly struck me.

Although I did really like ZZ Top back in the '70's. Tres Hombres and Deguello (sp?) were great albums.

I was just surprised to see them listed in the same league. Gibbons strikes me as competent. Whereas I personally view Knopfler as transcendent.

Another fan here. Don't like all his stuff, (but that's ok 'cause he doesn't like all my stuff either!) I do especially like his "tradiional" sounding tunes like "Sailing to Philadelphia". Also like "Golden Heart".

seen him play live few time now and even when he is ill and about to collapse he sings through his fingers. Awesome phrasing abilities and he makes it look like no effort at all. I've noticed he plays a weird way and that may be why some have trouble copting his stuff. I watched him on a documentary saying his big influence was JJ Cale. Making Movies was great. One musician who is raw talent.

Do you mean that he fingerpicks in stead of flatpicking? I play fingerstyle and I STILL can't sound like him, as much as I try to, it really is all in the hands.

I've been listening to a lot of Mark & Derek Trucks lately. I'm trying to emulate a bit of the 2 of them in my 7 string playing.

Amen to all the above. I also like his soundtracks. "Last Exit to Brooklyn" has been a favorite for years.

Whoa. I wish you better luck at copping their vibe than I have had.

Derek is amazing as well. I think he might be the best slide player outthere right now. And his wife is no slouch, musically either. Whenever they reproduce, their kids ought to have a HUGE head start musically.

I love Mark Knopfler too. Anyone remember the film "Local Hero" ? Great little film with a Knopfler score. A double winner!!!
