I need a challenging Drop D tuned song

Sign in to disble this ad
Not sure if this is in the right forum or not but here goes...

I've been commissioned by my teacher to find a drop D tuned song to learn and I'm having a difficult time finding something that will be challenging and help me to improve my playing.

So far the only 2 songs that I've come up with are "Black Heart Inertia" by Incubus and "What If?" by Creed. Both of them seem a kind of easy to me and I was wondering what all of you experienced Bassist thought. Any recommendations would be glady welcome.

Have a look at "So Cold" by Breaking Benjamin.

Why don't you go above and beyond what your teacher is asking and not only detune your E down to D, but drop your D down to C and pick a song. I find that if I change my tunings and play songs that I play in normal tuning, it really challenges me. Especially if you play funk!!! To me, what it teaches is learning your intervals and how to play them in different places.

But to really answer your question, what kind of stuff do you normally play? What is your level of playing at right now? If you give some insight into your background, it might help a little more.

Try learning "The Pot" or "Schism" by Tool.

+1
One of the bands i play in used dropped-D tuning frequently, and it has forced me to improve my playing in that area. However, "The Pot" has some challenging rythms. Other Tool songs as well.

Yep, this is it! I find The Pot to be difficult as well! Schism not so much...

The pot is pretty straightforward - try Aenema, it's a fun play-through

I don't do the drop D thing, but couldn't you just find any song that uses a lot of open E and just play the song in the key of D as practice?

Slither by Velvet Revolver.

I solved the problem posed by the main riff by playing it all on the D string, which is cool because that's exactly what the guitarist does (I play in a 3-piece + vocal).

Straightforward but odd at the same time.

the pot, schism and aenima, while all excellent tool songs, are, apart from a few sections pretty straightforward.

you want a tool challenge? the song lateralus.

the main riff/chorus is a bar of 9/8 followed by a bar of 8/8 followed by a bar of 7/8.

the second verse is fretless, with flanger.

the midsection starts with one bass track (open 2nd string) while you manipulate your flanger with your fretting hand, in realtime. then a second ascending bass part enters.

the outro culminates with a distorted whammy part

all the while theres a few odd times thrown in as well.

that should work your chops!
