I work with this guy from Samalia and he's a reggae fanatic. We talked for three hours strait about just Bob Marley one day! Here's some that he's told me

Bob Marley (obviously)
UB40
Coacoa Tea
Burning Spear <--I really like this guys stuff. Funkiest reggae i ever heard.
Awilo

Also some reggae i like is stuff like
Sublime
311
Pepper

I think you should be doin pretty good with those.
Let me know what you think

I bought a Bob Marley & The Wailers Greatest Hits on iTunes. Was only like $8-9 for 20 something songs that all are good.

Great suggestions thus far.
I'd add...
Black Uhuru - some of Sly and Robbie's best work
Bunny Wailer
Gregory Isaacs
Steel Pulse
Third World

Also, for some beautiful old-school dub, check out Augustus Pablo.

Pm sent to get you started.

Go out and buy yourself a copy of the Rough Guide to Reggae. It's be best book/starting place you can have. The guy who wrote it and did most of the leg work is probably the most knowledgeable in the world, and also owns one of the best record labels in the world.

steel pulse is awesome! 'true democracy' has some tasty bass on it.
if you can find an album called 'downbeat the ruler,' it's a cool compilation of some great jamaican studio bands (soul vendors, sound dimension, etc.).

a lot of great reggae and dub have come from south america as well.

If you can get it by itself check out African Herbsman by Bob Marley. It kinda think of the bass line in it as the Roundabout of the reggae genre.

You can't go wrong with the Harder they come soundtrack.
A nice compilation of old school reggae from the 70's.
