So,

Is it just me, or does the bass player from Sugarland suddenly make you want to listen to country music:

Wow. Yes! She is ridiculously hot.

It is just about my favorite bass as well. If it was a 5 string....

LOL! Yeah, she's hot. Too bad that Sugarland kind of epitomizes the worst of over-produced country-pop pablum.

If you really want to fall in love with a country babe who also makes insanely good music, go with Alison Krauss, or Neko Case, or Brandi Carlisle. Or if you really need yourself a bassist, you could just fall in love with Shonna Tucker from the Drive-By Truckers:

I think the flower really compliments the Jack Daniels.

I know of her through a friend who is a fan of Sugarland. I'm not a fan. Her name is Annie Clements and her credentials are pretty impressive with a B.A. from Berklee College of Music.

Shonna's definitely got her own special look! And she's a good, solid bass player... nothing flashy, just gettin' the job done.

Anybody who's not familiar with the Drive-By Truckers needs to become so. Even if you're not a fan of dark, sarcastic Southern country-rock, these guys simply smoke any band in this genre I can think of. Think Lynnrd Skynnrd with better musicianship, WAY better lyrics, more country-roots cred and none of the rockstar attitude. Their live performances as a headline act are legendary for careening through HOURS of their extensive catalog.

Yes indeed, the Truckers are a real force of nature live, probably my favorite current band. Would kinda disagree about musicianship though, from a technical standpoint. It's more like they're good-sloppy....in a Faces/Stooges kinda way.

GAAK!! Jennifer Nettles' voice is like nails on the chalkboard combined with the worst of redneck parody. I can't stand Sugarland. And as pointed out above, it's the worst of what's wrong with country music. No apparent roots in real country music, over-produced pop pablum, and a focus on production and image over song and performance.

From what I understand, she also owns one of Jaco's old basses.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll be glad to check out the Drive-By Truckers. Getting curious now.

I don't think she changed much from when she was Jennifer Nettles Band. It's not redneck parody, she really is... Well... she's charming, engaging, and cute as heck in person.

Country Music™ is an actively managed brand. Kinda like NASCAR. What will be commercial is very well defined because anything else will be quashed. Pickler = Underwood = Swift just like Rimes, Hill. I think other genres are prob'ly just as restrictive, but Country™ does a remarkable job of ensuring brand consistency and stability.

On the other hand, if you're fond of what used to be popular rock, you'll only hear it on country, Christian, or classic radio stations.

Kristen Hall is a friend of a friend, and I know there was some concern debate hand-wringing about the Sugarland project. Of course Kristen isn't with the band anymore. On the other hand, getting the three of them together, really good musicians in non-commercial genres, it was a no-brainer that their formula would make it big via CMT, country radio, and that scene.

Myself, I can't fault the choice. Banging your head against a wall trying to make money in folk-rock, singer-songwriter stuff, or play almost the same stuff for a lot better scratch in Country™ . . .
