Talking I utterly suck at guitar hero...and I'm proud to admit it!!!

Yes, that's right! I was over at my buddy's place for poker and played guitar hero on his PS3. I played the bass part (naturally) to Kiss's "I wanna rock and roll all night" on super easy and slow and I completely messed it up (grand total of about 16,800 pts, btw). I just couldn't wrap my head around following those stupid colours on a six stringed fretboard.

As I'm turning 35 this year I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer. I sold my ps2 and traded up to an iMac (productivity/creativity) and a PSP (games/internet/mp3 and vid player) - not to mention new bass gear I know these young 'uns have this game mastered so well that they even have competitions! There was a big competition here where the winner would compete at our local stadium on the jumbo screen

Anyways, kids these days (and some people around my age) call this game the sickest thing around and how cool it is how these "guitars" are even modelled after real instruments - and don't get me started on the whole Rock Band thing

I say, nothing beats the raw energy, emotion, and just plain fun of playing REAL instruments in a REAL band for a REAL audience. Nothing!

I sucked at it at first too, it's totally different than a real instrument. After some time, I got pretty good at it, then I thought, "Boy, I'd better get a life," and stopped playing.

It's one of those things where it's not worth getting good at, it's time I could spend playing bass. Hell, if I really wanted to (which I don't), I could figure out how to REALLY play "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet.

I'd rather suck at Guitar Hero and be good on bass than the other way around.

I kicked hard *** at the first Guitar Hero, but lost interest by the time the second one came out. I could nail just about everything but Bark at the Moon on expert. That one song I just couldn't wrap my head around.

Here's what I thought was crazy: a couple of months back I was at my former roomates' apartment and they had Rock Band. My friend Justin, whos only experience with musical instruments was the short stint of piano lessons he had when he was 12 or so, was an absolute MONSTER at the drums. He was nailing the Rush tune on the hardest setting. The only thing he lacked was proper hand technique. I seriously couldn't believe it, I've been playing drums for over a decade and I would have looked like a fool trying to play that tune.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it's obviously not the real thing. I'm not the greatest musician and I have an even harder time playing Rock Band. However, since it's not the same as really playing, it doesn't really bother me. I notice I have an especially hard time with songs I can play for real.

My 11 year old son, on the other hand, is getting pretty good at a lot of the songs on Rock Band. He just doesn't realize that no matter how difficult the song is in the game it's a whole different story playing it for real. He gets a kick out of seeing what's involved in playing songs on bass vs. the controller but then he eventually forgets the difference and starts thinking he could really play in a band based on his "expertise" at the game. Then I show him my bass again and the cycle repeats itself.

If can say there's anything good that came from Rock Band, it's that he's now listening to a lot of other music he never heard before and never had any interest in until now. When I played some of those songs in the car he'd ask me to put Radio Disney on instead. Now he thinks "new bands" like Deep Purple, Mountain, etc. are pretty cool. He still listens to Radio Disney, but he's also opening up to other styles of music now, including blues, classical, and jazz. From that point of view, it's been a good thing.

Anything that introduces kids to decent rock music is probably a good thing, but I've never wanted to play it myself.

I hate how everybody is like, "you suck at guitar hero, you must suck at bass" And I have friends who have lost their lives to that game!

Since NAMM has really been pushing Guitar Hero, I made these as a response.

I'm not very good either, because I'm also a guitarist. I only played it a couple of times, and found myself screaming "That's NOT how it really goes!!" at the TV. It's completely useless to real musicians IMO.

Good ones, jive.

I could never get past medium. It's just to awkward to be pressing a button out of my reach. On bass, it feels so natural to move around, but when I'm playing a video game I'd like to be able to reach the buttons without moving.

That point of view aside, I, too, found it harder to play songs I knew in real life, especially on lower levels of difficulty, because I would try to play parts that aren't supposed to be played. My friend is a really good guitar player, and I was surprised when he was playing on hard difficulty. I think the game is a good way to have fun, but to me it's just another video game, not a game that should be played in place of playing the real instruments. Most people I know are aware of the differences, but you'll have those few who are blind.

And I don't know about anyone else, but the statements on the loading screens irritate me.
"I swear officer! The TV just unbolted itself from the wall and flew out the window!"
"I used to hate when my amp caught on fire, but now I really dig the tone."
"If your ears aren't bleeding, it's not loud enough!"
and worst of all, I can't remember it at the moment, but it's something along the lines of...
"If you can hear the bass player, his amp is too loud"
Something like that. Pissed me off. Quite stereotypical. Don't know if anyone else is irritated by those things, but I sure am.

I tried playing Guitar Hero 2 or 3 I guess? Can't remember but it had The Seeker which is my favorite song to play on guitar. I go easy since I'm usually bad on this game and it just was horrid, I kept trying to follow the actually rhythm and not the game, I died pretty fast too...

I had forgotten to include that I knew that. Nonetheless, they annoy me.

Try playing it with the remote, not with the guitar...my god.

I don't own it but friends of ours do. I actually didn't do that bad after about 10 minutes of practice, but I still got my @$$ handed to me by their 8 and 10 year old boys.

Once again, I give you my favorite rebuttal:

Hope none of you have ever played a driving game. It's not the same as driving a real car, you posers.

I used to be scared that driving games WERE close to the real driving experience. I could not and still can not play those worth anything.

The South Park episode with Guitar Hero (I can't find a clip) where Stan's dad plays them "Wayward Son" on the guitar and they aren't impressed, and then later that night he tries to play Guitar Hero and fails miserably pretty much sums up most musician's experience with the game.

My friend, actually the same one who's stupidly good at the drums, would only play the original Guitar Hero on the controller. He was determined to get really good at it, and he did, he wound up being just as good as the rest of us using the guitars.

Heh, I like that. The bottomline is people are having a good time, what is so wrong about that? I doubt football players get indignant about people enjoying themselves with their Madden games...
