"I want more than it's worth........" Why Bother?

OK, I may take a bit of flack for this, but in the past few months I've run across a handfull of gear for sale threads that start out something like "I know that they're selling for a lot less, but I want $xxx for my xxxx" or "If I can't get my price, I'll just hang on, even though I know I'm asking too much."

My question is, if you know you're asking too much, why bother? Or at least, if you think you are asking too much, why shoot yourself in the foot by admitting this in the first line of your post?

Am I missing something?

Well, yeah, I guess that's to be implied, but why waste their time and the potential buyer's time?

Who knows. I just put what I think is a reasonable price for both me and the buyer and let it go. If no interest shows in a few days I might lower it a little or say that Im open to offers now or somethin.

I've found over time, there are a lot of people who are not real good at buying and selling things. Selling more so. I knew one guy that would put a price with OBO. Fine but his thinking was people were going to offer him at least his price and the OBO was above and beyond that. It took me quite a while to explain to him once you put OBO, your never going to see your asking price, that OBO meant or as much as I can get.

I always expect to get offered less than I'm asking. I may start out high knowing I'm going to be offered less 99% of the time. I wouldn't do what your talking about though. That's like, "Well, I'll sell it but only if someone offers me more than it's worth".

I figure they do it because they can. As far as I am concerned, all prices are just offers. He can offer any price he wants, but you also can turn him down. Maybe someone sees a reason for overpaying, and it's worth it to them (kinda weird, but hey--it's a free country) And heck, if someone was willing to give me more than it is worth, fine

That makes plenty of sense to me.

The ones that don't make so much sense are the ones that proclaim "I'm asking more than the going market value and don't have any intention of selling for any less" or something along those lines.
