I want to purchase a tube guitar amp! Help!

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for a small tube combo amp at or under $400. I don't need to compete with anyone. I just want a good sounding little amp for practice.

There are some little 5 watters by Epiphone and Fender... but I'm looking for a good amount of clean tone... and I think these will begin to distort too early.

The main contender is the Fender Blues Junior. It is right on the limit of $400 but I've read that there is a lot of clean tone in there.

There is also the Pignose G40... but I'm still skeptical on it.

Thanks for your help!

There is Always Bugera!

LOL

Try and find a Peavey Vtx Classic combo with 212's

those are awsome and double as a Great Bass Rig too

I haven't played one in the past few years, but in the past I was always pretty impressed by the Crate Vintage Club series. To my ears, they had more of a dry, Vox-type sound than the shimmery Fender sound.

My 6-watt Fender VibroChamp literally rattles the windows if I crank it up at home. It stays clean up to around 4-6 on the volume knob, depending on the guitar, and it's plenty loud for playing at home. Lots of people gig with 15-20 watt tube amps like the Blues Junior. The guitar player in our band has borrowed my 20w Crate Vintage Club for practice and he didn't have to run it wide open in our large practice facility. (an old barn out in the country)

I'd look into the Epi Valve Junior head (you could play it thru your bass cab) or the Fender Champion 600 or possibly the Pro Junior. And the vintage Fender Champ/VibroChamps are sweet. You should be able to find one and have it checked/updated by your amp tech for <$400, including replacing the original speaker with a new Weber or Jensen.

i agree with everyone who said check out the epiphone tube head--it is quite a nice amp, and at 130 dollars at MF you can get a 300 dollar 212 to put it through and you will have good volume without breaking up

Why do you want an all tube amp if you want versatility? I'd do some shopping and find an amp that meets your specific needs, but shop for some SS too, you might be surprised.

He didn't say he wanted versatility. He said he wanted a small tube amp for clean practicing.

But, you are absolutely correct. If versatility is what you're looking for, check out the Roland MicroCube for a hot little amp.

Thanks for the ideas guys... but I went with a Blues Junior. My main man at GC got me a great deal.

...Now I just need to learn how to play the guitar!
