Idea for Learning Notes

Sign in to disble this ad
I had an idea, since I'm going to try and learn the notes on the fretboard. I've always had a very visual relationship with the board - in other words, when I figured out a few scales, I would, in my mind, see certain "cells" on the fretboard, kind of like a geometric pattern that dictates "can play here" and "cannot play here". So, I figured that a good way for me to naturally learn the notes on the fretboard would be to have a fretboard with each note clearly labeled.

I thought about getting a cheap SX and a spare neck as a "note-learning bass", but then I remembered that I'm broke, so I was thinking of possibly just doing something to my existing bass, a Geddy Lee Jazz. Naturally, I don't want to hurt my baby, so I was thinking of ways to go about it. Stickers and whatnot.

Any ideas of how to get a "note bass" on the cheap?

Pencil it in? Or put masking tape between the frets and write on that?

Hmm. I tihink maybe scotch tape might work. I don't know it to leave a residue. Good ideas.

Most tape/stickers leave nasty residue after being removed.
That more-expensive blue (Scotch-brand) masking tape seems to be an exception to this rule...

There is a product called Goo Gone that removes sticker residue.. I used it when I took the stickers off my Pbass copy. Didn't seem to hurt the finish, and got rid of the sticker jizz.

Honestly, learn to read music, just a little.

You won't need really anything else after that, it's a serious conection between your brain, your eyes, and your fingers.

or, just give it some time, notes will come.

Just learn your bass. What I did when I was learning was when I had time I would draw four strings and 24 lines through it and label each one. Eventually I got it memorized. Then I just learned from there.
