If you could have any instrumentation in a band, what would you have?
For me, it'd be:
Guitar/Vocals
Guitar/Lap steel/Vocals
Rhodes/Keys/Vocals
Bass/Vocals
Drums/Vocals
I'm all about having two guitar players. I think it opens up huge sound possibilities, especially if one can do more than just play electric. The keys guy would be playing Rhodes most of the time. I'd spend my time playing fretless bass, grooving with the drummer. Some might say that I'd seem to have not much room to play, but I really like all the texture possibilities of having three instruments on top of the rhythm section.
I also really like bands where every guy sings, if only a bit. Rather than having one really great singer, having three or more people in harmony - think of all the cool jam bands and progressive bands where a few guys sing.

Possibility of a second guitarist. But I love bass prominence in bands ( obviously)

For a nice new-age worldy group I'd be into keys, bass, guitar, drums, soprano/altoist, violinist, and a fluegelhorn.
Small jazz band, bass, piano, drums, tenor, alto.
Bigger jazz band should have bass, piano, guitar, drums, tenor, alto/soprano, trombone, trumpet. |

I've played in bigger bands though and it can be awesome to have keys, percussionist and a horn section in addition to the usual bass/drums/guitar/vocals. You can cover so much material that way and arranging originals can be amazing. And the more people who can sing, the better.

Works best when all 4 can sing. When they can, it's the perfect band.

Kinda like this... | that sounds a lot like Incognito, except with more horns
that would also be similar to my ideal setup, although i would cut some horns out and replace them with a string quartet and also a male singer for balance

The only thing I'd add would be a rockin organ/keys guy.

There are obvious exceptions, but in general, one vocal gets tired fast unless there is something else to help carry the vibe.

I think that a dedicated vocalist is better than some other band member both playing and singing. Of course, there are more than enough cases of a bass/guitar-player handling the vocals exceptionally well, but... I think it's more about lack of choice. No one records both parts at the same time in the studio, right?
