The passing of James Brown made me think if there was one, surely he would deserve a place.
Then I started to think, who else?
Bill Monroe pretty much invented bluegrass. That's gotta be worth something.
WC Handy? You could make a pretty darn good argument for that...
Then I kind of ran out of steam. Elvis, Sinatra, Gershwin, Garth (gag) Brooks, Beatles and a bunch of others all had huge impact but, enough for the side of a mountain?
The clasical masters despite their profound contribution to music never really had that big of an impact on American music and culture (imho) and it IS an American mountain we're talking about so...
Who would YOU pick?
Keep in mind that this is the side of a mountain we're thinking about. Huge investment in labor, time and money, gonna be there for a thousand years... |

4 people, so it would fit. I don't even listen to The Beattles or anything, but seems like they did a lot. |

I'd say those are the four musicians who broke down the walls, and did what they wanted. I wanted to put Paul McCartney instead of John, but I decided to go with John. |

IMHO, James deserves a spot near the very top of the list. His contributions to R&B, Soul, and Funk were colossal. |

With the possible exception of Frank Zappa, nearly everyone has heard of these guys. |

Elvis
Ellington
Robert Johnson
I'm torn between Jimi and EVH for what they did for rock guitar. |
