Smile If you had to buy gear (bass,amp,...) again from zero, what do you get?

Sign in to disble this ad
(I don't know if there was a thread like this before. I couldn't find it.)

Hypothetical question:

Say there was a fire and everything you had was ruined. Everything: all your basses, amps, effect pedals, other gear you need for playing bass.
You receive a big insurance payout. (It's hypothetical )

What do you get? What would you buy again? What wouldn't you buy again? What would you get instead of what you owned?

me:

basses:
- Fender fretless Precision bass, Tony Franklin signature, same modifications on it like I did now. (buy again)
- Squier Classic Vibe 50s precision bass (buy again)
- a fretless custom build 4-string fretless, probably the Roscoe I have on the way (maybe buy again)
All other basses I have now I wouldn't buy again or get substitutes for.

amps:
Hartke heads and cabs. Probably the new Kilo head and Hydrive 4x10 cabs, or again Hartke XL series cabs. (first time Hartke amps buying, already have an XL cab)
Also possible I'll buy a Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II again with a TL Audio tube compressor.
But I like Hartke as a brand so much I'd consider going Hartke exclusively if I had to do it over.

effects:
I'm not buying back the big collection I have now. Most likely just some BOSS pedals.
RT-20 Rotary Ensemble and DD-20 GigaDelay and volume pedal.
Korg Racktuner.
(not buying the effects that I had again)

other:
BOSS digital recorder BR-1600CD (I had the BR-900CD)
BOSS DR-880 drummachine (had no drummachine)
studio monitors

That would be about it concerning what I need for bass. Not accounting for my electric guitar, classical guitar and digital piano.

Anyone else wanna play?

Seems like this could turn out to be a cool thread.

I'd buy myself a Stingray instead of the bass that I have now (Heavily modded Epi Thunderbrid).

As for amps... I'd just go out and buy a decent Ampeg (Instead of my Nemi 4x10 and 400 watt head)

That is if I got a LARGE payout. If I got what my gear is worth then I have no idea what I would do... Maybe get a decent Squier or something.

Probably wouldn't worry about effects either, at least not straight away.

Uh, with a large payout,

Basses
Fender Roscoe Beck IV(exactly the same as my current one)
Roscoe LG 3005(close to my current one)
Roscoe LG 3005 Fretless
Squier P/J to mod with a Kahler

Amps
Trace Elliot AH1200-12 Head
Trace Eliott 1518(1x15 cab)
Trace Elliot 1048H(4x10 cab)

Effects
MXR Blowtorch
Eventide Modfactor
Dunlop Crybaby(either bass, or From Hell)

If I didn't get much cash, I'd buy the cheapest bass in my local store that felt good, and a decent amp.

It's funny this thread came up - I was thinking the exact same thing a couple days ago.

BASSES
Fender American Deluxe active Jazz (to replace current one)
Fender Precision
Nice 5 string Jazz, probably Lakland Darryl Jones or Fender Am. Deluxe active

AMP
Ampeg or Mesa
Bag End D212

Hmmm... hope my insurance payout is good.

I'd probably get

Basses:
Vintage or American Jazz bass, block inlay maple neck, natural or sunburst
Squier or SX Jazz Bass for modding, strung BEAD

Amps:
Gk 800RB or SVT-VR, or maybe Markbass LMII
Bergantino NV610 cabinet

Effects: These could be hard to replace. I go through them a lot, and a lot of music I play is based on playing effects as my instrument. A few I know I would have to track down:
Polish Love/Red Llamma. I love this sound.
3xfx Fatman. It makes beautiful music.
Analog delay, digital delay, tremolo pedal, compressor.
Pitchblack-2 or StroboStomp tuner.

For recording I'd also need to get back my rack mount preamps, and old delay rack, plus all the DAW equipment, mics, etc.

EBMM Bongo 5 HS or EBMM 5-string HS

Pedalboard:
EBS Microbass II (repurchase)
EBS Multicomp (repurchase)

I've got everything professionally insured, so in the event that something like this DID happen, the payout would be fine. I'd probably go for a variant of what I have now...

EA iAmp Doubler
Schro 1210

It's got a couple more bells and whistles than my current rig and would be a tad more versatile. Not sure if I'd buy another BassPod XT Live to replace the one I'd lose or get a couple of stand-alone pedals.

Basses, I would probably buy the ones I have now because I'm really happy with the tones I have and get from them. The only variant would be...

NS Design CR 5 string (my Kydd Carry-On EUB is great with 6 strings, but having the full scale of an upright would be enough for me to look past having a 6er)

I wouldn't change anything, just replace it. Maybe get a Rumblefish instead of a G&L since I've always wanted one.

Never would have bought all the combo amps.

Would have bought the Rickenbacker 4003 in July of '06 when I could have bought one new for $1180.00 out the door.

Would have bought a Peavey VB-2 when GC had them for $399.00. I hesitated and missed the chance.

Should have bought a MIA Jazz Deluxe V in '07 before the crazy price increase.

I'd be interested in trying (2) Ameg B200R's paired.

I'd probably get a Classic Vibe P to replace my modded SX.

Get a new LH500, cuz I really dig it, and get a different cab. Either a 410 4 ohm something (maybe the Marshall one, because it's cheap) or a 8ohm 210.

Assuming that the 'large payout' is somehow larger than the actual worth of my current setup, I'd head for a MIA P and either an SWR Redhead or some flavor of an Ampeg half-stack. If I received current replacement value, I'd actually first try to find another Schecter Stiletto Extreme 4, as it's a MUCH better instrument that the purchase price would suggest; otherwise, I'd probably get either a Squier CV 50's or the VM P and the 300w 210 Ampeg combo. I'd also most likely duplicate my current pedalboard, since I'm really happy with it now.

I wouldn't change my basses, but I think that I would get Acoustic stuff instead of GK stuff.

I have thought about this before. My basses, I'd try to replace, but I waited over 2 yrs for my Ric 4004Cii. Still, I love what I've got. Amps, I dunno, maybe a Mesa Bass 400+ paired with my fav big cab of all time, the Mesa Deisel 215, (which I have now. For a smaller set-up, I think I'd just replace my Mesa Walkabout head and GB Uber 212. Have yet to find a smallish rig that sounds as good as that one does. Pedals, forget it. Took me forever to assemble the 11 pedals I have now, and some can't be replaced, (Menatone MailBomb). Might just put a much smaller board together, and pocket the change. Horrible scenario, in any case.

Ironic that this got bumped.
Because if I had to made this thread today the OP would have looked different.

I'd get a Tony Franklin fretless P bass, BOSS CS-3 compressor, Ernie Ball volume pedal, EHX Deluxe Memory Man, Gallien Krueger MB Fusion (well waiting for it) and two Barefaced T'Midgets.

Basses:
Sterling by MusicMan Ray 34
Used Warwick Streamer Stage 2 5-string
Used Warwick Corvette 5-string

Amps:
Upgrade from MB SD800 to the SD1200 or switch to the TSA500

Cabs:
Either another MB 6x10 or I`d shoot for a used MB 2x10 and 4x10 for more gigging options.

Effects:
EHX Big Muff Pi
MXR 288 Bass Octave Deluxe
Korg Pitchblack
Some sort of DI

Miscellaneous:
I`d repurchase all my cases and other essential equipment, and I`d replace all my cables with Planet Waves. After this I`d still have money left over, but I think I`d honestly be happier with the smaller set up.

I tell you what though, losing my US Ray would absolutely kill me. That thing has nostalgic value that no $$ amount could possibly replace. It makes me feel empty just thinking about it.

Well, being a lefty I can't just go down to the local GC and grab a replacement bass.

That said I would try to find a decent Jazz bass and a small powerful amp like a Shuttle, Little Mark or Carvin and a couple of small cabs, maybe Avatars to get me back up and running.

Then I'd probably save the money and start looking for used high end gear. I wouldn't have as many instruments but would have ones of high quality.
