Put them in a scenario where good stage presence dictates that they move all over the stage and connect with the audience and see what happens when you give them stands.
Appropriate when the situation calls for it, although I personally feel that you should memorize as much as possible if possible.
That being said, I turned it off because it was not visually stimulating to watch Ben Harper stand there with his eyes closed. I'll just buy the CD.

Few bass playahs are "performers" and they stand out and need not be named here.
Can you capture the groove, the feel of the tune, from the chart? That's where the musician comes in and the reader is simply enabled.

Like, why is it that some genres of music require running around all over the stage to sustain an audience's interest, and others do not? It's hard to imagine an orchestra or jazz quintet where that would be expected. But any metal band who played sitting down would be considered total crap by most fans. Why is that? It's an interesting question.
Anyway, back to the OP...

Anyway, back to the OP... | Because you're on stage playing for an audience - it's what the audience wants. Classical fans have a very different musical mindset than death metal fans.
People that attend jazz concerts are either up dancing and ignoring what's happening on stage, sitting back and feeling the jazz with eyes closed, or just staring at the stage while listening to the music. In most of these cases, music is the only form of interaction with the audience, it is purely audio.
It's all about the atmosphere.

Anyway, back to the OP... | Different forms of theater also have different levels of audience interaction - Kabuki and Noh are very different from Broadway, which is different from Opera.
It's not reasonable to expect all performance genres to use the same protocols.
